Re: The 30 Something Rectal Cancer Patient

I really liked Peloton's response. I was diagnosed IIIC rectal cancer at 38. It's a shock to say the least, but a year and a half later my life is pretty normal. I can eat what I want, exercise, go to work, play with my kids, whatever. And there's no evidence of disease so far (knock on wood). The 1...

Re: February exercise and weight loss thread

I just registered for the Pan-Mass Challenge - a 163-mile 2-day bike tour in August to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I've never done anything like it, but I'm pretty excited. I've been doing 3-4 mile jogs (9-10 minute miles) every other day for a while. I think I'm going to start...

Re: If only......

I often think about this too. I had bleeding in the toilet for many years prior to colonoscopy. Doctors always were very dismissive of my symptoms saying they were hemorrhoids. I let it go and it got worse and worse. I simply didn't take it seriously. Finally it became bad enough that I was having e...

Re: back into the workforce

I wasn't away from work as long as you, but if it does come up I usually say "unfortunately I was out for medical reasons during that period" or something vague like that and keep it brief. It seems weird to gloss over it since it's such a big part of your life, but I don't think it helps ...

Re: Just diagnosed pt3n0mx

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he gets excellent care and responds well to it. Outcomes for stage 2 are usually very good so try not to worry too much. And while the treatments are all difficult, they are usually manageable. He'll get through it. I would personally be very wary of treatmen...

Re: back into the workforce

Metamucil has really helped me with the clustering. Also eat on a schedule. It makes things much more predictable. And take it easy on leafy roughage. If you find a few things you like to eat that work well, stick with that. Be careful about your diet and you will learn to control things. If you rea...

Re: Scanning tomorrow anyone else?

Got a clean report card. NED FTW!

Also talked to my onc about the preposterous and irresponsible NYT article about CT scans last week. He (the director of a major U.S. cancer center) says he dares anyone to show evidence that CT scans cause cancer, because there isn't any.

Re: Scanning tomorrow anyone else?

Waiting until Monday sounds tough. I did that last time and resolved to schedule the scan and the onc visit closer together from then on. For me I only have to wait until tomorrow morning this time. They told me 24 hours is sufficient to analyze the scan. Got to drink a wonderful oral contrast mixtu...

Re: Scanning tomorrow anyone else?

Hey I'm having a chest, abdomen, pelvis CT tomorrow too! I'm confident it will go well for both of us. It helps me to remember these facts: * Even if they do find something there's lots they can do about it. * Just like a meteor falling out of the sky and killing me right now, I have no control over...

Re: sleep with infusion pump?

I loved this thing: http://poppypocket.net It's basically two polyester pockets and a 6-inch elastic band with velcro. You can fold up all the tubing in one pocket and the pump fits in the other. Then wrap it snuggly around your chest and you're all set. You can roll over all you want and never mess...

Re: Waiting on diagnoses

I doubt very much the doctors know something they're not telling you. Speculation without information is, unfortunately, pretty useless - whether you're a doctor or one of us. Just make sure you keep breathing in and out. Remember that whatever they find there are ways to treat and deal with it - wa...

Re: Reversal/Takedown COUNTDOWN!!!

I remember when the gang of med students and residents and seemingly everybody came to huddle around me at some ungodly hour - must have been like 6 every morning. I had trouble sleeping while on Dilaudid but I was often in a drowsy purple haze while listening to music when they came in. I felt like...

Re: December 2013 Exercise Thread

I didn't work out with the pump on. During the 14-day FOLFOX schedule I would work out during the second week. The first week after infusion I was just too tired. I generally kept it to elliptical (about 30-40 mins with 120-140 strides per minute) 3 days a week. At first I was a little reluctant to ...

Re: Had stage 1 TEM surgery.....seeking advice (rectal cance

You're lucky to have caught it so early. You should feel very encouraged about your situation and your prognosis. It sounds to me like you're in very good shape indeed. In my opinion, LAR is a bit overkill for what you've got. It sounds extremely unlikely that there is even any regional spread based...

Re: Questions about going to the bathroom in the meantime...

I got a lot of relief from hydrocortisone suppositories. Those and Advil did the trick for me before treatment and during chemoradiation.
