Re: Colonoscopy coming up....gastroenterologist or surgeon?

I have had my surgeon perform my last 2 colonoscopies. I figure he's familiar with my new anatomy, and he does a lot of colonoscopies, so I feel confident he knows what he's doing. It probably doesn't matter much though.

Re: Any younger men post rectal surgery?

Just so you are aware, Oxaliplatin (the "OX" in FOLFOX) destroys the germ line cells in testicles and will likely cause infertility at least temporarily. In my case it lasted over 2 years before coming back. I was treated at Mayo in Rochester with radiation and surgery (chemo was done clos...

Re: Terrified - 3cm polyp

I had a similar polyp found and was told by phone by some non-doctor at the office that the polyp was "negative". The GI doctor told me to come back in 2 years for a follow up colonoscopy. Just over a year later I was diagnosed stage IV. After my Mayo care team reviewed the original pathol...

Re: Short course radiation & surgery scheduled—questions

I had short course radiation from Mon-Friday the week before my surgery on a Tuesday. No recurrence at any location and it has been almost 7 years.

Re: My CRC with liver mets journey

I used to take Coriolus Versicolor PSK from mushroomscience.com. Is that not as good as the stuff you get from Asia? I don't need it anymore, but just wondering.

Re: Radiation on mets

I asked about radiation to the liver mets when I was first diagnosed, and the answer was that radiation to the liver usually does more harm than good. I'm guessing because it harms healthy liver tissue, further reducing liver function. I don't know if that is still true, particularly with proton bea...

Re: Newly diagnosed stage 4 colon cancer at 42. Looking for hope and inspiration.

For those of you who are 7+ years out from a Stage 4 diagnosis. Are any of you NOT receiving treatment from a top 5 cancer hospital? I went to Mayo in Rochester, so I consider that a "top 5" hospital. I have low confidence in local hospitals based on experiences with family members. For i...

Re: Newly diagnosed stage 4 colon cancer at 42. Looking for hope and inspiration.

I was 35 at the time of stage IV DX with a 20 month old daughter. At the time I managed to stay positive, yet deep down expected the worst. Next week will mark 7 years since diagnosis, over 6 of which have been NED. My doctors now tell me I am most likely cured, but I still remain vigilant. We added...

Re: Stage 4 - liver mets disappeared

I don't think I would want to be on a long term chemo regimen if there's no sign of active disease. I would probably opt for stopping chemo and want VERY close surveillance. If something comes back in the liver, then go for the surgery and more chemo. Just my uneducated opinion.

Re: Input & comments sought on stage IV treatment plan

Mine were simultaneous, and they did open surgery instead of laparoscopic to shorten the time under anaesthesia (was still 8 hours). The recovery was pretty rough but at least I didn't need another surgery. They also set up a temporary loop ileostomy which I had reversed in a small surgery 7 months ...

Re: Input & comments sought on stage IV treatment plan

Since your liver is operable as-is, I think the HAI is less critical. My DX was similar to yours and I was treated at Mayo in Rochester 6.5 years ago. They did a synchronous resection (liver+rectum) during the same surgery. Also, they gave me the choice between short course and standard course radia...

Re: Newly diagnosed 36 yo male with stage IV

Welcome to the club that no one wants to be a member of. I was age 35 with a very similar diagnosis as you, except a couple more liver tumors. It sounds like your liver is operable, which is VERY good news for you. Definitely find a competent cancer center with experienced doctors, because I believe...

Re: Post surgical changes. Reoccurrence?

I had a note about "post surgical changes" in a CT scan about year after surgery. My surgeon ordered a PET scan and fortunately it turned out to be non-malignant. I would definitely ask your doctor whether it merits further investigation.
