Re: Oxiplatin and 5fu pump..... Last chance.

Doing my second attempt on the Oxili now. The side effects aren't fun but if it works..... Everyone reacts differently, however, the side effects tend to get worse the more doses you have. I've had two so far in this go around, and I'm having mild hand & foot numbness. The cold insensitivity has...

Re: Can colonoscopies be dangerous?

I think others here have amply answered your concerns. I'll just mention that before any sort of procedure, you'll be given an informed consent form to sign. The informed consent mentions everthing that can possibly go wrong and it can be an intimidating and scary list (heck just listen to the side ...

Re: The Currently Incurable Scientist: Turning a Cold CRC Tumor Hot

I too enjoyed the blog posts. Although I work in the clinical trial field, I'm a finance guy so more than a bit of the technical medical jargon and almost all of the biostatistical jargon are over my head. I really appreciated the plain English explanations, and the off0-handed Star Trek reference i...

Re: chemo

The short answer is no one can really tell, and I suspect the genetic makeup of your specific tumor(s) has a lot to do with it. In my case, I was diagnosed at stage 4 with 10+ liver mets and a peritoneal implant. I did a full course of FOLFOX and started Avastin/5-FU maintenance chemo and had a very...

Re: Top oncologists and cancer centers question exorbitant drug prices

I'm not going to make the argument that drugs, in general not just limited to oncology drugs, aren't overpriced. Especially in the U.S. That said, lets consider: [*]Of 5,000 compounds conceived only 5 make it to Phase I testing [*]Of those 5, only 1 will become an approved drug. [*]Completion of pre...

Re: Dogs detecting cancer

I've suspected animals could tell. I have one cat that has taken to jumping in my lap and rubbing her head against the right side of my belly since shortly before I was diagnosed.

It would be interesting to see if it could be done.

Re: Just diagnosed - So Many Questions!

Stardust, Sorry that you have to join us here, but there are a lot of great people here who understand what you are going through. Everyone reacts differently to the chemo drugs, so while we can share our experiences, your mileage may vary, as they say. I get the infused 5-FU as I don't have enough ...

Re: New stage IV diagnosis/my brother

I also don't have experience with the stent, but I did continue working around FOLFOX treatment and still do on maintenance chemo. Whether your brother will be able to work around treatment is really dependent on how he reacts to the treatment and what he does. Fortunately, I have a rather sedintary...

Re: How to Choose Between Quality Versus Quantity of Life

Julie, that was beautifully written. Since you said you were hoping to start a discussion on the subject, I'm happy to start off with a few thoughts. I've had two people who were close to me pass away since I began this journey. My grandmother, who was 5-weeks away from her 101st birthday, asked to ...

Re: Higher Vitamin D levels and colorectal cancer survival

I've mentioned before in addition to the CRC, I had gastric bypass (gbp) back in 2007 (dx with CRC in 2013). One of the vitamins that gbp patients malabsorb is vitamin D, and it wasn't until after the CRC diagnosis that my endocrinologist put me on a high-dose vitamin D therapy to help with my diabe...

Re: Liver directed therapies?

In addition to the HAI Pump, there are 2 other liver directed therapies I am aware of. The first is radioembolization (also called SIRT or Sir Spheres). Small glass beads with a radioactive element are directed through the hepatic artery into the liver. If I recall the half-life of the radioactive p...
