Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

The problem is that there is no way to be 100% cured even with the surgery. Cancer could had already spread. In fact if you research this forum the people here who progressed to stage 4 from pedunculated t1 polyp had the surgery and clear lymph nodes. The cancer spread by blood. If there are no risk...

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

Good - that's better than sessil. Based on the size of the cancer. You also only had level 1 haggit - cancer was limited to the head of the polyp. I had my pathology checked in 3 different hospitals and wasn't given budding report. I wonder if it wasn't there since they didn't report it. One report ...

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

How old are you? I was only 39 when my polyp was removed. You can't really do much at this point - just hope for the best. My 1st follow up colonoscopy was clear and no new polyp. Please ask your doc what type of polyp you had. Also read the NCCN guidelines / it will help you understand your situati...

Re: Stage 1 folow up CT scan

Stage 1 is in a grey zone. Here are the NCCN guild lines. Page 37. It depends if your stage 1 is a polyp cancer and if it has risky features. Most stage 1 don't have regular CT scans.

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

Were you told the polyp was stage 1? If yes, than it was not precancerous but malignant. Polyp cancers are early cancers. Most people end up being ok. But few are not. NCCN has guidance recommendations. Page 37 and that includes follow up testing. https://www.nccn.org/patients/guidelines/colon/files...

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

I think stage 1 is a wide range. From cancer in the polyp where the invasion to submucosa is minimal and in the polyp not in the colon wall. To the 4 cm rectal tumor t2 cancer. You have to talk to your doctors. If I had a rectal t2 polyp I would had the surgery. In your case with the minimal cancer ...

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

Yes, that's truth. Based on my understanding if you have resection and clear lymph nodes than it's like 1-2% that your cancer has spread by blood. Never anything for sure. With my polyp I was told chances less than 1% it's in the lymph node. One surgeon from Baylor said 3-6%. So once again... hard d...

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

It is a very difficult decision. My polyp was huge. 2 cm stalk and 3.5 cm diameter of the head. The cancer was 0.6 cm on the top of the head. Stalk completely clear of dysplasia or cancer. Your cancer was really small. What cancer center did you go to? What did they recommended? Based on NCCN it dep...

Re: Stage 1 with no surgery...any thoughts?

I had the same situation. It depends on the type of a polyp. My polyp was pedunculated - mushroom type. Haggit level 1, low grade. I had more than 2 opinions including cancer center. And was told no on surgery. I had 2 cm free margins of any dysplasia or malignancy. It really depends on the polyp. W...

Re: Is this Cancer or Pre-Cancer??

It will all depend on complete pathology. I also had superficial invasion to submucosa. We are not talking about submucosa of colon but of the polyp. But the polyp is connected to the colon. That's why in cases of invasive cancer the pathology is really important to indicate surgery or not. If a sup...

Re: Is this Cancer or Pre-Cancer??

That's great news!!! If it's only stage 0 than it's really pre-cancer and it can't spread. If it's invasive cancer contained in the polyp - that's what I had than it's stage 1 and it can spread. With flat polyp stage 0 - you don't need surgery. If it's stage 1 and flat polyp - you need surgery and c...

Re: Is this Cancer or Pre-Cancer??

Sorry to hear. I had a malignant polyp. My was pedunculated - mushroom like. So it was completely removed during colonoscopy and completely biopsy done. Your husband's was flat - most likely sessil polyp. The bad that it wasn't removed in one piece since they can't tell clear margins. If the cancer ...

Re: Melanoma and Colon Cancer

Thanks Nik. I have decided to go with the flow... I am not as worried anymore. Because it will not help me. Funny that after melanoma in situ diagnoses I am spending TG with my kiddos on a Carribbean island. Life is too short - no time... Happy Holidays to all!

Re: Melanoma and Colon Cancer

Nik, Thanks. I couldn't imagine the scare your family had. The Cancer center had said Melanoma in situ is 100% cured with surgery. Stage 1 has like 95% rate in 10 years. It's when the pathology is wrong and situ is really stage 1. Anyway I had the surgery and my 4 mm mole was in situ. It was a perfe...

Re: Melanoma and Colon Cancer

Hi Nik, How are you? Thanks for the info. Happy to hear that your sister's boy is ok. This is from Cancer.gov: I think most cancers 0 or in situ are the same expect few. Do I rember correctly breast cancer is one of them... In stage 0, abnormal melanocytes are found in the epidermis. These abnormal ...
