Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

SMH Toronto, storry about W&W apptoach: Some patients have such a dramatic response to chemotherapy and radiation that there is no detectable tumour at the time of surgery, said Dr. Fahima Dossa, the study’s lead author and a surgical resident at St. Michael’s Hospital. These patients, termed co...

Re: lower survival rate for stage 2 than stage 3?

Every little counts, some times it might mean surviving or not. Chemo after surgery in some studies didnt make much difference in survivall rate, but still might give some people push over the edge. Activity during therapy gave 12% edge in survival, comparing to non activity, as per some studies. Ju...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Study from Habr-Gama "Habr-Gama reported that extending the duration of the chemotherapy post-chemoradiation increased the complete clinical response rate (cCR) of 48%, achieving an overall complete response rate (i.e. including cCR and pCR) of 65% [27]. Recent studies have tested the hypothesi...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

This is not original W&W approach, in original studies patients didnt have chemo after chemo/rad, actually for this extra approach where we get folfox after chemo/rad, there is no current studies, I think they are in progress. I found one small studie where people received 3 rounds of folfox aft...

Re: T3N0M0 Rectal Cancer- refuse surgery?

I was diagnosed with T2, N0, M0 rectal adenocarcinoma on 3/21/17. After many discussions with surgeons and oncologists, I have decided not to have surgery and go with chemo radiation wait and watch approach. Studies have shown that with early stage rectal cancer, you can have a complete response an...

Re: T3N0M0 Rectal Cancer- refuse surgery?

Radiology dep. gave me printed stuff to avoid antioxidants, so I avoided even green stuff, avoided vit c, whatever boosts imune system counteracts chemo/rad, buy boosting imune system one boosts cancer cells at same time, point of therapy is to kill it.

Good luck!

Re: T3N0M0 Rectal Cancer- refuse surgery?

Nothing unusual, just took beta glucan before chemo/rad, dont think it had much to do with final result. My activity was normall, walked every day 4-5 km, rain or shine, was off work during therapy, so that was my main job for time being. Gym,first time over killed it, felt it for 2 days. Avoided an...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Couple of interesting links, since I am off, started folfox, got plenty of time on my hand. First study is interesting, I wish I've seen it before, would ask for folfox tretments right after 25 rounds of chemo/rad. With this approach , "51% achieved sustained cCR that never required surgery for...

Started folfox, have 5FU infusion for 48 hours, after initial oxaliplatin and leucovorin infusion.
As soon as I walked out side of hospital my voice changed, didnt expect reaction that fast, outside temp was 7,8 celsius, with cool wind.
This drugs are really powerfull.

Re: T3N0M0 Rectal Cancer- refuse surgery?

Things have improved, it will get better from here. There is no guarantee, surgery or no surgery, with surgery oddss are in favour of being cancer free. There are so many studies out there, its confusing, one could support any theory. W&W approach is fairlly new, offered to very small percentage...

Re: T3N0M0 Rectal Cancer- refuse surgery?

Go one step at time, see how you respond to chemo/rad, have ct, mri and scope couple of months after, re-stage it, than go from there. Your stage is considered curable with surgery. W&W approach is risky, but every thing is risky in life, you have to be able to live with it. 25% of people respon...
