Re: Does anyone have a little drinky drink during chemo?

I didn't until well after the liver job - mostly Expecting that chemo would be challenging for the liver, I decided to leave it doing its things without alcohol throughout chemo. We did however celebrate completion of each (3 week) Xelox-Avastin cycle with a fancy/restaurant dinner that included a (...

Re: Post Bowel / Liver Resection Post-Op Symptoms - Q for Those Who Have Been There

Has anyone had groin / testicle swelling a month out from surgery? No, I did not. But could it be caused by insufficient blood supply? After my colon resection (immediately following diagnosis - liver resection was done 9 mos later), surgeon mentioned that he had removed cancer growths all over the...

Re: No, we don't have the best healthcare system

I'd have to understand what they mean about costs. I've written about my experiences in where sticker prices is often far higher than the price that insurance actually pays or that people actually pay (a lot of medical bills simply don't get paid). The study that the article is based on, measured t...

Re: No, we don't have the best healthcare system

My out of pocket health care expenses at a minimum for this year will be $22,400 (annual insurance premiums $15,600 + annual $6,800 deductible). This does not include medical expenses that I will incur that are not covered by medical insurance Wow, that's big money . . . . . In our system (Netherla...

Re: No, we don't have the best healthcare system

If we look at world rankings, we find that 17 out of the top 20 hospitals are in the United States with the United States also holding the top 7 spots. http://hospitals.webometrics.info/en/World And then you have the NCI which can develop treatments that even the top cancer hospitals in the US don'...

Re: No, we don't have the best healthcare system

There are a lot of areas in the United States where care is difficult to find. And great care even harder to find. And these areas drag down national statistics. But there are also areas with great care available. The other side of the healthcare coin is the level in which people take care of thems...

Re: No, we don't have the best healthcare system

Expensive? A large part of the answer can be found in the title of a 2003 paper in Health Affairs by the Princeton University health economist Uwe Reinhardt: “It’s the prices, stupid. ” . . . people in the U.S. typically use about the same amount of health care as people in other wealthy countries ...

Re: Please! Read me...

The doctor has labeled my DH stage 4 colon cancer with liver mets as palliative?! What do you mean with 'labeled'? I hope for you that it just a label on on your file. What do your docs say? My file said palliative too when chemo started. We took it as a blow / were extremely disappointed and confu...

Re: Colonoscopy without sedation, should I?

Hi Everyone Thanks for your comments. I had the scopy yesterday without sedation . Am glad that I made the decision - it was all very easy. No problems, no pain or even the slightest discomfort. Docs (over)rated my (dis)comfort level at 1 (Gloucester score 0-5; "one or two episodes of mild disc...

Colonoscopy without sedation, should I?

I need you advice . . . Hospital called to set a date for a next scopy in May. ⋅ Had my first one fully sedated @ Dx in 2012 - my dear wife witnessed the ordeal a-z :( ⋅  Went for another one in 2015 when nervous about a hardened lump around the place where colon was shortened. W...

I did the quarterly ones for a year (4x in 2014). Been on half-yearly ones since (6x in 2015-2016-2017) with the next one set for May and probably one in Nov 2018 (5 yr after surgery). Thereafter annual ???

Re: Weird symptoms, any suggestions?

. . . had bright red blood but i was passing quite large stools then Blood in stool always sets *my* alarm bells off. And, where I happen to live fortunately, any GP would have sent you off for colonoscopy right away (fully covered for everyone). But if it is beyond your budget and correlates with ...
