Re: New Member HIPEC questions ?

Hello--our daughter had the HIPEC surgery. Once attempted with Dr Loggie and then about 10 months later with a doctor in Dallas. It is possible for chemo to shrink peritoneal mets; however I think your husband will be in for more chemo. It's almost like an insurance policy against recurrence. So he ...

Re: Checklist for spouse upon my demise

When our daughter was sick at the end, we had a legal power of attorney so we could access her accounts and such. She kept all her account info in a spreadsheet in her computer with the website, account info and password. In the last few weeks, she was unable to make decisions about bills and things...

Re: Newly diagnosed and scared stiff

You did the hardest part--you have family history and you got the colonoscopy. The thing I would say is if you have to get cancer, now is the best time in history to get it. Scientists are so so close to way more effective treatments and even a cure. You just have to get through the surgery and get ...

Re: Feedback sought on a sad family situation - from cancer patients perspectives

You know Ethan, cancer is hard on family. It's hard emotionally, time wise and financially. It's hard on relationships. Your mom has been very fortunate to have such a great support system, but now that's changed. I think that's life and everyone has to adjust. Our daughter lived 12 hours away from ...

Re: Glimmer of Hope?

For Breast cancer there is an immunotherapy that is being tried on patients (not mice) right now. My family is very involved with our local Komen office and we got to meet a research doctor who does this. It's for HER2 gene and it is infused into the patient and their bc never comes back. The immuno...

Re: Mutation CHEK2

Lydia, Hope this helps you. My husband and I are very involved in our local Komen affiliate. We recently had a research doc that we sponsor come talk to us. She works on immunotherapy in her research. Right now they discovered a vaccine for woman bc patients with the HER2 mutation, infused it cures ...

Re: Sports bra bothers my scar

Have you ever seen those tank tops with built in sports bra? I wonder if you got one of those in a bigger size then you normally wear, if it would be a bit looser and feel better.

(Bev--I love your answer, what a woman you are! Love your spirit!)

Definitely go with palliative care! Your husbands pain can be managed at home, he can have home health care/hospice nurses to come out.

Re: Hello, scared looking for advice

Hi frozen! Just wanted to add--my daughter had the total colectomy and it turned out fine, her recovery was 3 weeks and her function with just the small intestine was fine. Sometimes biopsy results take 10 days, 2 weeks so dont worry because of the delay, it's normal. That happens even on a routine ...

Re: Do you think I might have colon cancer?

Just want to advise you can develop food allergies later in life. My husband grew up on a dairy farm eating eggs, toast and milk his whole life. In 2011 when he was 53 he started having a terrible sore throat that wouldn't go away. Allergy tests revealed he is now allergic to eggs, gluten and dairy....

Re: Best US-based medical oncologist - Signet Ring Cell CRC?

There is a doctor at Baylor in Dallas--Dr Jeff Lamont who might be one to check out. He did an exploratory lap for my daughter and scheduled Hipec. This was after another surgeon declined to do that. He's with Texas oncology, or he was in 2012.

Re: Best US-based medical oncologist - Signet Ring Cell CRC?

What area do you live in? I am familiar with doctors who treat SRC in Texas and Nebraska, but I can't say who is the best. Just which ones we tried, at the time.

I would recommend the laparoscopy to take a look and see if the chemo is working.

Re: What would you do?

Michelle, Just wanted to give you this advice as an option to check into. There is a doctor in Omaha at UNMC who specializes in peritoneal carcinamatosis. There is a man from Wisconsin (I think) who is signet ring cell and has been treated in Omaha at UNMC. Below is a link to this man's blog, the in...

Re: How to tell a loved one quality vs quantity is better?

We didn't have the option, the doctors told us our daughter was in too bad health to get more treatment. She agreed with them. It actually got to the point where she said to us "I don't want to live this way". At that point she had an ng tube, a catheter, a picc line and a dilaudid pump an...

Re: OT..insurances ..

Insurance is so annoying! Another thing to do is write a letter of complaint to the state Insurance Dept. insurance companies hate Insurance Dept Inquiries. If you did meet your deductible, this will get their attention. Also, that $7000 bill, I'm sure they'd set up a payment plan, could buy you som...
