I don't post often but...

I wanted to share some good news. My dad was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer and multiple mets to the liver in August of 2008. At that time, he was in quite a bit of pain, and could barely eat. A week or so after being diagnosed, he had a heart attack. Everything looked bleak at that point. Eve...

Re: Losing blood...

We don't know the site of the blood loss. A few weeks ago, he had a stint put in his heart. The doctor told me that his levels should be between 12 and 14. Dad's were a little over 8. He received blood then, and recieved iron when he had his Chemo. A week after that, his levels were only 7. He recie...

Re: Losing blood...

I don't have an answer yet, so I was hoping that someone else had been in the same situation.

Losing blood...

I've posted before that my dad has stage IV colon cancer, and is being treated at MD Anderson with single agent Irinotecan. He had his first treatment, and had no side effects other than being sleepy. Today, he went to his cardiologist for a follow up and is receiving 2 units of blood. This is in ad...

Change of plans...

Dad was going to start Chemo today with Irinotecan. We were told it has very few side effects, so everyone was relieved. Today, he found out that instead, tomorrow he will be starting 1) Oxaliplatin, 2) 5-Fluorouracil and Leucovorin, and 3) Bevacizumab We don't really know what to expect now. I did ...

Dad had a small heart attack today...

He was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer a few weeks ago. He finally has an appointment for more testing at MD Anderson later this week. The last hospital did not feel like his cancer was operable at this point. Today's heart attack was a real surprise. The surgeon was able to put in a stint, but...

Re: Frustrated with the hospital...

He had the biopsy done yesterday, at the hospital where he has been for the past 3 weeks. He had his port (? I don't know the technical term) put in this morning, and is enjoying a weekend of freedom. His doctor said that we would have the results of the biopsy Wednesday at the latest. His doctor pu...

Does anyone here pay 20% of all treatment costs?

My dad is having a liver biopsy to pinpoint what chemotherapy he will need. His Medicare pays 80%, but there is no cap on his out of pocket expenses. Can anyone give me an estimate on how much his 20% might be a month? $1,000? $3,000? $5,000? He is going to do whatever his oncologist recommends, but...

Re: Frustrated with the hospital...

I just spoke to him, and he said I could start calling around today to find where I could get the fastest liver biopsy done. He was told this morning that next week was the earliest he could hope to have it done there. The doctor that saw him this morning said that there is no reason for him to have...

Frustrated with the hospital...

This is my dad's 3rd week in the hospital. They did a colonoscopy, and told him he had colon cancer, then they did a CT scan. and told him that the cancer was in his liver as well. He waited for them to read the samples, and tell him what type of cancer it is, and start chemo. The slides couldn't be...

Question about surgery

Have you heard that if a person has surgery to remove tumors on the colon and liver, the surgery can actually cause the cancer to spread to other sites more quickly than if the patient did not have surgery? I understand the reason for having Chemo before surgery, I just am not sure about not having ...

Re: Scheduling frustrations....

It is the needle biopsy.

The person at MD Anderson said that they do not see patients who do not have a tissue diagnosis of cancer. She said that they don't diagnose, just treat.

Scheduling frustrations....

For some reason, the doctors decided not to repeat Dad's colonoscopy. They didn't get readable slides the first time, and didn't feel like they could do better a second time. Their plan is so send him home, and have him come back for a liver biopsy. The problem is that from experience we know that o...
