Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

How far in is your tumor. Mine was 10-15 cm in and it was removed and I was plugged back together without getting a ileo. I left the hospital with food exiting in the same place as went I got to the hospital. Key is finding a solid surgeon. Not sure I'd chance it without surgery, but I had a couple...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Thank you for sharing your experience, Peter. I think this approach could be a good option for those who have the complete response to chemo/radiation. Upon talking to both my medical oncologist and radiation oncologist they are not fans if this approach. I am going to Mayo clinic for a second consu...

Re: Large Polyp

Update: received a call from my GI and there is cancer on the top of the head of the polyp. The stem is clean. I asked to have 1nd review and was told that it was already reviewed twice. The whole polyp was removed in 1 piece and there is a tattoo. My GI is still sending me to a surgeon to confirm ...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

Hey ALW, thanks for that! Rolf Benirschke played for the Chargers with an ileostomy. :D Find us a boxer and I'll cheerfully stand corrected on that point as well. Good thing I phrased it with weasel-words :) I'm still trying to figure out how the guy (or gal? or guys/gals?) who climbed Everest mana...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

I am stage III currently in neoadjuvant chemo ( 3 cycles so far) Treating at Sloan. When I asked my surgeon if I could forgo surgery if the chemo 'worked" to shrink nodes, he said that would be like playing Russian Roulette with three bullets in the chamber. Now that's me///every case is diffe...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

Hi all, Since we've moved to the topic of what it's like to have an ostomy... Our nurse (who has one) told us at the beginning: "There's nothing you can't do with an ostomy that you could have done without one". People have apparently climbed Mt. Everest, gone scuba-diving, etc. Now that ...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

No, the bag is not supposed to smell unless you have a leak going on, but when you empty it , then it stinks because it's fermented food with enzymes- the digestion stop at the bottom of the short intestin ( ileum). Thank goodness! I was pretty grossed out at that thought! Bear in mind that if your...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

I will chime in to provide input on life with an ileostomy (although my ileostomy is due to an extensive intestinal perforation). The first order of business after surgery is finding a pouching system that is agreeable to your skin and to the topography of your abdomen (crevices, skin creases and d...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

5 years ago my surgeon talked to me about the "wait and see" option...that it was being done in Europe with some good results. He said I would have a colonoscopy about every 3 months. The reason was that it appared that I had a "complete response" to the chemoradiation. I opted ...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

I am not working since i am home with my one year old but I think u can totally work, it's basically invisible and you just go to the bathroom a few times a day for a few minutes. The downside is that it really stinks, more than any diahrea you've ever had. But bring a bathroom spray and it will be...

Re: Breaking the Ice

Hi Cowgirl. I have adult children also. I told my daughter first, mostly because her husband had seen me one day and commented on how I really didn't look well. Then he went home and told my daughter. That prompted me to get my symptoms checked out. I let my sons know after the mass was found. I'm g...

Re: Stage 3 no surgery?

Lydia - thanks for letting me know what the ileo is like and how it is different than the colostomy. Are you able to work when you have the ileo if you have to empty it that often?
