Re: Concerned about possible recurrence

Yes Claudine, we just got the date this morning. He’s scheduled for August 2. I hope your DH is feeling well. I need to spend some time catching up. Peter, we feel pretty comfortable about her age/experience. We think she’s maybe mid 40’s. She graduated from an Ivy League school of Medicine in 2002...

Re: Concerned about possible recurrence

Thank you so much Peter. I had to take a short break because I didn’t want to come here posting updates during the dark times. That just doesn’t benefit anyone. DH got his biopsy results last Friday, and unfortunately they found cancer in the sample. They scheduled him for a CT scan, which was Mond...

Re: Concerned about possible recurrence

It’s extremely frustrating. Yes, especially since they told him he had HGD on the initial surface biopsy. So now I don’t expect these more significant biopsies to look perfect…. I just hope they know for sure how cells without cancer or dysplasia are supposed to look after radiation. At least other...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

ok, so i'm officially on W&W. Scans and sigmoidoscopies every 4 months. Surgeon told me today that highest odds of recurrence are in the first year, so i'll be expecting it. For now, it's good to avoid surgery and be ok. I can't imagine being lucky enough to get away with it, but at least my te...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Quick follow up since the surgeon called us today. She told us there is no urgency, a relief. The next step will be the MRI and an ultrasound with a biopsy that will go deeper into the location where the high grade dysplasia was discovered on the surface. That will give us a better indication about...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Thanks prs, we’re doing one more MRI and sigmoidoscopy in 5 weeks. If that’s clear, they’ll put me on W&W. I’m hopeful :D It's my experience the vast majority of doctors are ultra conservative when it comes to making treatment decisions, I think they are trained that way. It's very likely if yo...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Thank you nifty624, fantastic news! This as you said helps those of us going through this. Hi @MadMed I keep thinking about you and wondering how things had worked out. It's sometimes difficult to ask the question in case it's not the right answer, but I noticed your signature says you were due to ...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Hi Everyone! I just wanted to check in and give my update. I know how important it was to me when I first was diagnosed to read all the updates. I am approaching the 3 year mark post surgery (the 3 year anniversary of stopping the post operative chemo will be in June). I have had either colonoscopy...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

@PRS, Jolene and Mozart123, i promised to report back from Pre-OP. I had a very long and good meeting with the surgeon, we reviewed the MRI which stated "dramatic improvement from treatment" it mentioned one tiny area of hyperintensity that could be intraluminal fluid or remaining cancer....

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Thanks Peter, yes this Wednesday is pre-op meeting with a planned sigmoidoscopy and review of the MRI. I don't have the MRI results yet. I am prepared for all eventualities except for spread. W&W comes with it's own set of issues, right. Ongoing anxiety etc.. Have you had to deal with that much...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

My doc may be pushing it but he mentioned that there are published papers going up to as high as 16 weeks. Just FYI. Mine was only CCR at week 12, had he followed the original week 8 I would have already gone under the knife. Counting my blessings everyday ! Hadn't heard about the 16 weeks before. ...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Wow ! Looks like we have our very first 2 cases of 5 years mark of NED while on WW on this board - both @PRS and @mozart123 ? Is that correct ? Congrats to both !!! :D :D :D On a side note, I just got official clearance on my 3rd year of NED on WW which should also reduce the chances of recurrence ...

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

Funny you should ask, I’m about to head out to get an MRI done. Simgmoidoscopy and DRE plus MRI results Wednesday. I’m feeling anxious, hoping for W&W but aware that it is unlikely. I will report back as I find out. Thanks for reaching out. MadMed, you are at eight weeks from the end of radiati...

@MadMed welcome to the thread. Have you seen any further reduction in the size of your tumor post radiation?

Re: Rectal Cancer: Habr-Gama Watch and Wait Strategy to Avoid Surgery

hi prs and the rest of the gang. Just stopping by to say hi, 5 years in the game and score is on the my side. Just had last MRI-negative, CT was negative while back in the summer, scope, all good basically. Symptoms from chemo and rad will be there to remind me. My surgeon said this is last MRI, as...
