Re: Possibly unnecessary open liver surgery

Was this a Dr. Ryan / Dr. Berger (aka the "two Daves") production? Those guys (+ Dr. Hochster at Yale (now at Rutgers)) cured me.

Re: Fasting During Chemo

After about six cycles of Folfox, I began fasting 48 hours before each infusion solely to avoid bowel movements for as long as possible after infusion. Breaking my nose was more comfortable.

Re: CT Scan Just came in Liver Met (one)

You may begin to taste a little 5FU in the food you eat during the 46 hour pump time. I, too, hit the coconut water hard, but eventually I started to taste 5FU in it -- even days after the pump came out. It took about two years after chemo ended until I could drink it again.

Re: CT Scan Just came in Liver Met (one)

Some one mentioned chest hair above, and I want to advise those among us with chest hair that the chemo infusion is likely to involve some serious tape around the port. I always did a pre-infusion shave of 3-4" inch radius around the port and profited by it.

Re: Just found out I have cancer

Had surgery two days ago, planned to do resection. Unfortnately, they found several seeds/mets in peritoneum, so they sewed me up and I start chemo soon. So I am stage IV signet ring adenocarcinoma. I am so lost and hopeless. This cant be happening. It is not fair. My wife doesnt deserve to see me ...

Re: CT Scan Just came in Liver Met (one)

Anyone do the 2day on 12 day off regimen of folfox/oxalaplatin with pump for 3 months, 6 treatments? Is the chemo tough when given like this? Also installation of the port, is that scary? I did 12 cycles with the pump + Oxali + Avastin and 8 more without the Oxali NOV 2012 - AUG 2013. Neither the p...

Re: any peeps with BRAF mutation on here?

I was also BRAF V600E and stage IV. I had a right hepatectomy and cholecystectomy in October 2012. Then 12 cycles of FOLFOX/Avastin followed by 8 more of just Florouracil and Avastin. The cancer never returned after surgery. More detail in http://coloncancersupport.colonclub.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&am...

Re: Stage IV Suvivor Celebrates Third Anniversary of Surgery

Following up here. I just had another clear CT scan, so that makes it five (5!) years and two months of NED since surgery. I should also mention that I have been lifting free weights regularly for the last 14 months, and I expect to attempt a 300 lb bench press (I weigh about 225) later this week af...

Re: Stage IV Suvivor Celebrates Third Anniversary of Surgery

Just an update here: I just celebrated my fifth anniversary of NED.

My situation was ugly, but here I am. If I can do it, so can you.

Advice -- above all, stay positive and resolute. Never give up.

Best regards.

Re: Needle biopsy spreads cancer?

Has your Mom had a PET scan meatie? The onc's office called and said that a PET scan will pretty much gave the save indications as the ct scan. So, a pet scan will not be done. This seems inconsistent with my experience at Mass General with a possible met on my liver. They PET scanned instead of bi...

Re: hot lava poo

On the positive side, look forward to things getting back to normal after chemo. In the meantime, though, it's not fun. The suggestions above are good. I used to fast for 2-3 days before chemo, which seemed to be the most effective way of dealing with this particular side effect.

Re: Avastin or no Avastin?

A few thoughts: 1. Avastin is VERY expensive, at least it was in 2013, when I was taking it. As I recall, it was $20,000 per cycle. 2. I strongly suspect that Avastin aggravates certain undesirable side effects of Fluorouracil,in particular painful bowel movements. 3. At diagnosis I had a single liv...

Re: Breast cancer chemo vs Colon cancer chemo

I understand (and have observed) that two common chemo drugs for breast cancer -- adriamycin (aka "red death") and taxol -- are significantly tougher to bear for most than Folfox, though the oxaliplatin did start to wear a bit after 9 or 10 cycles.

Re: Does everyone's CEA go up during chemo

My CEA doubled from 6.65 to 13.8 over six months of FolFox + avastin after surgery which included the removal of half of my liver. CEA dropped back to the 6s. I was NED the entire time, though, and have been for three years since surgery. 4-5 months after I stopped chemo, CEA spiked to 17 for a mon...
