Re: Long-term survival with spine mets??

Spinal and bone mets aren't as common as mets to other locations such as the liver and lungs with CRC. When my dad was diagnosed in 2010, I had a very difficult time finding much information about this online. Everything I read back then said it was very rare. Over the years, I have seen a few posts...

Re: Just diagnosed and it's EVERYWHERE...what to do now??

I’m very sorry that you are in this situation. I haven’t posted on this board in years but your situation is very similar to my dad’s at diagnosis. His cancer was found due to a severe backache that would not go away. At diagnosis, his mets were extensive and in most of the same places that yours ar...

Re: NON-hereditary, non-polypous colon cancer?

Fritts, back when my dad was undergoing treatment I had a very similar question and I believe it was Bev to point this out to me. I was confusing polyposis with polypoid. The two terms are not interchangeable althought they both start with the prefix polyp. Polypoid vs. nonpolypoid designates whethe...

Re: "Indolent Tumor"

Indolent tumors are slow growing/non-agressive tumors. With solid tumors, I believe the term grade 1 is used. If you are interested in your immune system or immune system cancer then read on as it is interesting. I have personal experience with this so here goes. Although it can be used to character...

Re: Outwardly thought we were done but.......

My dad had both colon and kidney adenocarcinoma. He was stage 4 from the start. At first he was diagnosed as unknown primary. After a full body CT to search for the primary the radiologist reading my dad's CT diagnosed him with stage 4 kidney cancer (extensive bone, extensive lung, and soft tissue m...

Re: Avastin, Irinotecan and Dementia?

After reading what you meant by dementia, if you do not hear back from his doctor by 5pm today I'd take him to an ER. I think that his oncologist will probably tell you to take him to an ER or to get him to MSKCC's hospital if possible. This doesn't sound like chemo brain to me. I hope it is or some...

Re: Avastin, Irinotecan and Dementia?

Ditto what Bev said. I'd call his oncologist ASAP to see what's going on or bring him to an ER today. Is he on any pain medications? Pain medications can cause a change in "awareness", mental status, and memory but I wouldn't call that change dementia-like unless he is taking far too much....

Re: Clean Bone Scan

That is wonderful news!!! Did you see my post in your other thread asking about the bone scan. I wrote about having your parathyroid hormone level checked. It's called a PTH blood test. Hyperparathyroidism is the other main culprit for high blood calcium. You may have normal calcium one day and then...

Re: What type of shake to drink?

This may not be very nutritional but it was the only thing my dad would eat for a couple of weeks... vanilla ice cream shake. I suggested that he try this when his appetite started decreasing. It was the only thing at the time that he was willing to try. After trying it, he ate it frequently when no...

Re: Full Body Bone Scan Tomorrow - What to Expect?

I hope that your high calcium is not due to bone mets. I'll pray for a no hot spot scan. Hopefully after your scan comes back clear, inquire about having your PTH (parathyroid hormone) checked. You could also inquire about having your PTHrP (parathyroid hormone related protein) checked but this is u...

Re: Why don’t docs prescribed methadone?

My dad was on methadone for unrelenting pain that no other pain medicine would touch. Methadone is a last resort because it behaves different than other pain medicines. It's usually tried after all else fails to bring acceptable pain control to the patient. I too was freaked when I heard that my dad...

Re: Dexamethasone & insurance

A few weeks after my dad told me about the insurance issue (he said it was the Dexamethasone that was denied) he let me look at all of his oncology medical records the day before we were bringing him to see a new oncologist. I immediately found what was denied based on his flow chart records (chemo ...

Re: Options??

I just wanted to add something - Is your mom at a big cancer center (i.e. Sloan, MD Anderson, Hopkins, Mayo, etc.) or is she working with a local oncologist? My dad's first oncologist, a local guy and a piece of work let me tell you, did very little for him other than giving him chemo and pain medic...

Re: Radiation cost information

Thank you so much for all of the great information. We actually went back and redid her taxes as we thought she had to include the bills that were dated either late December 2010 or that reflected treatments in 2010. We didn't realize that what matters is when the bill is paid. Thank you so much! We...

Re: Options??

My dad had similar mets. but his were much more extensive. I should also note that my dad was being treated for colon cancer but in the end he was found to also have kidney cancer so we aren't sure which one was actually causing his mets. but up until the time of his death he was treated as a stage ...
