Re: ULAR + ileo tips welcome!

Hi Rob
If you are still having problems with high output you might try eating white marshmallows, they slow things down.

Re: ULAR + ileo tips welcome!

Glad to hear things went well. Give your stoma a name and boss it around. Things called Eakin seals (like playdough rings) are a big help if experiencing leaks. Remember to stay well hydrated and eat low residue, avoiding skins, seeds etc. Chew, chew, chew. Change your bag in the shower. If you find...

Re: ULAR + ileo tips welcome!

Hi Rob I'm also an Aussie and live in rural Victoria. I had a ULAR with temp ileo in March 2015, reversal in May 2015, so I'm 4 years out. However, my surgery was open rather than laparascopic, so my recovery time was probably longer than what you might experience. I was in hospital for 10 days. Had...

Re: Having a really hard time with ileostomy

Hi, so sorry you're having a rough time. The first few weeks are challenging dealing with a temporary loop ileostomy. It's important to remember that an ileo is much harder to manage than a colostomy so please don't beat yourself up. Here are some ideas i found useful: give your stoma a name, then b...

Re: Another post-reversal output issue thread

If you are passing gas and faeces then it's unlikely you have a blockage. Your experience is not unusual. Many members of my LARS group wonder where all the poo comes from proportionate to their intake. If you are clustering it can seem as though you are passing a lot more than you actually are. By ...

Re: Did anyone ever decide to go back to ileostomy after reversal

Within our LARS support group several members have opted for a reversal of the reversal but they have gone to a permanent colostomy rather than the loop ileostomy they had to allow the anastomosis to heal. As Miss Molly points out on her excellent post on this issue on this board, a permanent colost...

Re: APR surgery for low rectal tumor

Having had a ULAR myself, and now having Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS), I would suggest that you fully explore the possibility that your husband may well end up with LARS if his tumour is extremely low.. Recent research suggests that people with a permanent colostomy have as good as, or eve...

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time. LARS sucks. Did you know that there is a Facebook group called Living with Low Anterior Resection Syndrome? If you're not a member already, you will be made most welcome and find lots of support and information. Best wishes.

Re: Preparing a facts & to-do-list for "newcomers"?

Following on from number 3 'LARS is a thing': ask your doctors about the possibility of watch and wait as an alternative to resection, especially if your tumour is/was very low.

Re: Is a ileostomy reversal worth it for a 60 year old guy?

Yes. I have no rectum, straight coloanal anastomosis. However, my anal sphincters are intact. For those where anal sphincters are compromised, an APR with permanent colostomy is usually necessary. Fifteen years ago I would have had to have a permanent colostomy too but ULAR is now possible.

Re: ESD (Endoscopic submucosal dissection) Anyone??

I had an endoscopic mucosal resection after a large flat polyp (that was supposedly benign) was found during a colonoscopy. Unfortunately, although the polyp was succesfully removed, the second biopsy identified adenocarcinoma so I was referred to a colorectal surgeon and went on to have a ULAR. I d...

Re: Is a ileostomy reversal worth it for a 60 year old guy?

Hi Steve, Your question is very valid. It's a tough one. I can only give my opinion based on my personal experience. I had a ULAR at age 56, losing all of my rectum and sigmoid colon. I was reversed 12 weeks after the resection. I now have major LARS. It's manageable but, like you, so was my tempora...

Re: Rough time after 6 month Follow ups/ibs

Hi
You may possibly have LARS (Low Anterior Resection Syndrome ). There is a Facebook support group called 'Living with Low Anterior Resection Syndrome' that may be helpful.
Best wishes for improvement.
