Re: Just diagnosed with rectal cancer and terrified

Thank you all for your wonderful words of support! After talking with my doctors and getting scans out of the way, I am feeling calmer. I do have a question though: I had a pet scan that came back clear (except for my tumor), no spread to other organs. Is it still possible I could be staged at a fo...

My worst day was the day after disconnect, although the extreme fatigue started the evening after disconnect and persisted for about 36 hours before gradually improving.

Re: Better news, Neuropathy & questions

My neuropathy continued to progress after treatment and now that I am more than three years out I assume it is permanent. But I also remain NED more than three years out, so at this point I have no regrets. It is (for me) definitely the lesser of two evils. I think my situation is not really the nor...

Re: A cautionary tale

Such a sad story. I was a physician before my diagnosis and unfortunately saw this over and over again...although the stakes are a lot higher when you are dealing with cancer

Re: Taste Change Advice

For me, bland foods tasted metallic and even putrid, but spicy food such as Thai and Indian tasted good. Oral marinol really helped make food more appealing

Re: Another new diagnosis

What a frightening experience! I am glad to hear that they weee able to remove the entire mass and that they only found cancer in one lymph node. It is terrifying to get a new cancer diagnosis, but you will find many stories to give you hope (I had cancer in at least 5 lymph nodes and that was more ...

Re: Chemo before or after surgery?

I didn't know about the second part. I'll keep it mind and will probably eventually read about it in a paper. When I was first diagnosed in 2014 there were some preliminary data from the PROSPECT trial that showed (if I remember correctly) an 85% disease free survival at 4(?) years with neoadjuvant...

Re: Chemo before or after surgery?

Option 2 is not only done to reduce the chance of needing surgery...there is also a hypothetical long term survival advantage to treating the micrometasteses first (and not waiting 4-6 months to do this as would be required in option 1) I lost my entire rectum and have a permanent colostomy but it d...

Re: Help! I’m scared!

I am hoping everything turns out to be benign. My primary is in the rectum, but I am definitely able to eat out (spicy Thai curry and ice cream today) and travel (uganda last summer, Brazil next month). The first few weeks are frightening, but it will get easier.

Just saw the oncologist again and I'm still NED more than 3 years after I completed my last chemo. I don't know what tomorrow will bring, but today was a very good day :-)

Re: Just diagnosed with rectal cancer and terrified

I was in your shoes 3 1/2 years ago. A new cancer diagnosis is terrifying...but I promise that it will get easier once you know all the details and have a treatment plan in place. Treatments are effective and there are many success stories here and elsewhere that will inspire you and give you hope.
