Situation Update- would appreciate your input!

After about 2.5 years from surgery to chemo to NED CEA started rising for 6 quarters and ct scan and pet scan confirmed a mass 1cmx3cm in same general area as original colon cancer for which a total colectomy was performed. There appears to be no scans showing metasasis and the mass in the right abd...

Re: Recurrence Questions

Thank you for explaining. This is very helpful. I'm not sure why the oncologist has not mentioned some sort of maintenance chemo after this recurrence (should the only thing found be the 1cm x 3cm mass in the abdomen and nowhere else), either the same FOLFOX or some other treatment. She said FOLFOX ...

Recurrence Questions

As a brief recap, due to finding a mass in the right side of abdomen during a CT Scan 2 weeks or so ago, the surgical board met and reviewed the scans and determined that the surgeon is able to remove the mass (1cm x 3cm), but they want to have a PE Scan done tomorrow and review the scans to make su...

Re: Update CEA & CT Scan Results - Advice/Feedback Needed

Hi all, just as an update: I have several questions embedded below and would greatly appreciate all of your feedbacks! Anyway, about 4 years ago, since chemo (FOLFOX) was already given to treat colon cancer following a surgery to remove a cancerous mass which made necessary a total colectomy the onc...

Re: Update CEA & CT Scan Results - Advice/Feedback Needed

Do you have any inflammation? That could cause CEA to go up bit not sure by how much.

Update CEA & CT Scan Results - Advice/Feedback Needed

Hi Everyone, Your feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated. Here is a brief history: Mid-June 2014 - Diagnosed with "Stage 3" colon cancer, met with surgeon for pre-op advisement which was that a total colectomy was needed/best. The following week, a surgery was scheduled and the tumor...

CEA Update

Just took a quarterly blood test and got CEA results back. For the past 5 quarters before it, the CEA number has been going up. Some quarters by tenths of a point (0.1, 0.2, etc) , other quarters by whole points (1.0, even 1.1, 1.3) Here is the history below. As you can see, starting at least 10/29/...

Re: Colon cancer and dentistry questions and CEA question

Just got results for the latest quarterly blood test and CEA was 4.2 , so in updating the results history and looking at the trending, it was up and down for the first 5 quarters. Since 1/28/17 it's been a clear trending upwards again.. or could say even since 1/29/16. From 1.7 to 4.2. Dentist said ...

Re: CEA levels - would this trend concern you?

Hi. Another member on this board suggested that I be fully hydrated before I leave the house and go to the chemo center for cea test. I have found that when I drink a good amount of water an hour or so before the test, my cea numbers, on average, are lower. So do you recall if you were dehydrated w...

Re: CEA levels - would this trend concern you?

Before you go getting too upset, please check that the lab is using the same testing method on both times. There are two very different tests (Bayer/Seimens & Roche) with different 'normal' levels and they CANNOT be interchanged. The normal lab values are different from each other....for exampl...

Re: Colon cancer and dentistry questions and CEA question

CEA elevation can be caused by infections/ inflammation. Polyps can raise CEA. Obstruction can elevate CEA. Even fibrocystic breast can cause a minor elevation. I had a reading of 4.4 and then my scan came back that I had walking pneumonia. It went down to normal after 2 weeks on antibiotics. A ben...

Re: Colon cancer and dentistry questions and CEA question

Thanks for your replies. Just wondering because of the below CEA history. As you can see, it seemed pretty stable at 1.9 except for a dip down to 1.6 and 1.7 during the first 5 quarterly blood tests - nothing over 2.0. Then on the 6th quarterly blood test 2.1. The oncologist said that there's no nee...

Re: Colon cancer and dentistry questions and CEA question

Thanks for your reply. A few other questions:

What do you do to preserve or strengthen the bones you have left?

Did you get caps put in or teeth replacements?

What other things aside from second hand cigarette smoke causes CEA to go up?

Colon cancer and dentistry questions and CEA question

The oncologist indicated that things that can affect CEA levels and cause them to fluctuate include exposure to cigarette smoke. Has anyone else heard this before? Are there any other things that can cause CEA levels to fluctuate similarly to how cigarette smoke does? The other questions are: as a c...
