Re: Radiation for Lung Met

SBRT is targeted radiation done by a radiation oncologist. It is very different to the radiation that targets the entire body. You can find more about it here: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cancer-in-general/treatment/radiotherapy/external/types/stereotactic-body-radiotherapy-sbrt RFA...

Re: Should my father do chemo after RFA treatment of single lung met?

Hi Stu, thanks for your input. Resection prospects seem to be much better than SBRT & RFA. I hope your mother stays NED. Do you remember the radiologists definition of slow growing? My father's met was initially 1.4cm after an eight/nine months scan. After SBRT it went from dead to 2.4cm in thre...

Re: Radiation for Lung Met

Is it SBRT that is being offered? My father's experience was that it killed the met for about six months, but seems to have missed something as the met grew again. We also did not have chemo afterwards. There are others on this forum for whom SBRT worked, and it also seems to have worked despite no ...

Should my father do chemo after RFA treatment of single lung met?

My father had a single lung met three years post initial colon surgery. His team sent him to SBRT as least invasive option (bad lungs, location doesn't make him VAT candidate). After SBRT, oncologist said chemo would only be dealing with hypothetical presence of cancer in blood as its only a single ...

Re: RFA treatment in MSKCC - covered by insurance? costs?

A relative spoke to Medicare. It seems that my father is eligible for Medicare, even though he never paid into social security. We just have to pay a much higher premium, around $500 per month. Does this sound right? Any ideas on how to get the 20% co-pay covered? Thanks for the tip on the social wo...

Re: RFA treatment in MSKCC - covered by insurance? costs?

We aren't patients there. We aren't wealthy and he doesn't have insurance. I need to look into getting him insurance once I'm there. Im not even sure where to start.

RFA treatment in MSKCC - covered by insurance? costs?

This is a really long shot but I thought I'd try. I'm in a middle of a transatlantic move to NY and we just found out that my father's lung met has come back. The doctors have decided to do RFA (he previously did SBRT, it didn't work). The only problem the needle they need to do it is not in the cou...

Re: Lung met growth after SBRT??

Unfortunately the worst has been confirmed. The radiation oncologist who did SBRT said that the FDG uptake after 9months of SBRT make him suspect that the nodule is still alive and kicking. How accurate is the FDG uptake? His CEA has gone down though. He wants us to get surgeon to reconsider our cas...

Lung met growth after SBRT??

Had a very brief and inconclusive talk with the nurse over the phone today in which all she could confirm is that the radiologists screwed up reading my father's latest Dec PET by comparing it to his June CT rather than August PET. Before saying that she did say that the radiologists noted that his ...

Re: Lung Mets - wrong staging? Experiences?

I spoke to the oncologist about immunotherapy and the status of my father's cancer (which he didn't order on his tumor yet). He said immunotherapies are something he would consider as a last resort, when the cancer has spread beyond control. He also said that the drugs are pretty expensive, at aroun...

Re: Post-lung surgery or SRT chemo - what were you offered

Thanks for bumping the thread and for members' feedback. My father cannot have VATS as he has severe emphysema (45+ years of smoking) and the surgeon is of the opinion that the risks of surgery outweigh the benefits, esp. given his history of heart surgery and where the tumor is (he can't have VATS ...

Post-lung surgery or SBRT chemo - what were you offered

My father (cancer history in signature) is scheduled to begin his stereotactic radiation therapy on a lung met (not candidate for surgery, poor lungs). He will undergo simulation on Monday, and then x4 sessions Tues-Fri. The radiation oncologist said that chances of local control are about 90%. He i...

Re: Lung Mets - wrong staging? Experiences?

Hi Peta - any news from the tumor board meeting? I spoke to the surgeon on the phone and he said my father's lungs were borderline and high risk and since they are talking about local control rather than cure, the tumor board are of the opinion that they shouldn't put him through a major surgery aga...

Re: Lung Mets - wrong staging? Experiences?

Hi Maia, may I ask, do you say this because radiation ablation is known to be dangerous for severely emphysematous lungs like those of my father? My appointment with the radiation oncologist is not until Thursday. I'm actually panicking about the Onc having managed to convince us to do the lung biop...
