Re: Newbie here with questions

I would try to get a colonoscopy. It can diagnose way more stuff than just cancer. Looking back at my experience, the moment that things shifted for me (I was a couple years older, but still 30's) was when the Dr. asked if I would be willing to do a stool sample at home. I immediately said 'yes, ple...

Re: Not diagnosed, refuses medical treatment

Can I pretend to be a daytime talk show host, because it sounds like the guy secretly wants some drama? You are a great partner and very caring. I hope everyone can find someone that cares enough about them the way you clearly care about your boyfriend. I just want to lay out the harshest reading of...

Re: Just diagnosed and trying to keep from freaking out

Most health systems will have a messaging system, mychart or the like. Its effectiveness varies on the system and the specific Dr., but I would start giving it a go. Chances are your oncologist's NP will be looking through these and be able to answer most questions quickly, or pass it directly up th...

Re: Are you serious?????

One of the features of nearly all cancers is the unknown. This has got to be extra tough and isolating with such a rare location and presentation. My Grandpa was a big golfer. When He found out I wrote left handed, he told me I should learn to golf left handed because then you won't get as much advi...

Re: Ativan for Anxiety

Ativan was part of the bag of pill bottles I got. The pharmacist stated that it was a mild antiemetic. I came into this whole thing with a pretty serious (and pathological) anxiety about needles. Anything that compromised the skin. I've still never seen the scene in pulp fiction where he jabs Uma Th...

Re: How to Select a Surgeon

I always liked to get at least two doctors to say the same thing if I was doing something irreversible. No good surgeon will be offended if you get a second opinion. It gave me a nice slice of piece of mind.

Re: Radiation burn!!!!need help

This is the worst place in the world to get medical advice. You need to talk to a real Doctor. I saw my Rad Onc every week. He wouldn't even look at the burns. Ditto for my Onc. I asked, I tried to show them and they literally turned away. Since then, I've talked to other cancer patients and found ...

Re: Radiation burn!!!!need help

I also soaked in baths. Sometimes I would fill two. One as hot as I could stand and one as cold. I'd do five minutes hot, one minute cold. It was at least a distraction.

Re: Very down and really need...something

I just wanted to write about the 'kids' bit. It is slightly off topic. I live in a pretty odd situation as far as generations and families. It has been great in helping me deal with medical issues and such. On the flip side, my wife's sister's family, whom we have shared a home with for almost 15 ye...

Re: Very New Here

You also will want to do a stool sample. Over-application of antibiotics can also lead to c.diff or resistant bacteria. You should also find someone like a therapist that works with cognitive behavioral therapy. No matter the medical diagnoses, it would be good to have a professional in your corner....

Re: How Did You Survive Radiation?

This was tough... the toughest part for me so far. You really want to get your BM's worked out though. Eventually I had radiation issues around my anus that, during bowel movements, was some of the most intense local pain I had. My solution was two fold. One, try and limit/schedule bowel movements. ...

Re: I'm terrified.

Even in the last few years, they have made major progress with colon preps, so this article is a bit dated. It is Dave Barry talking about his scope in 2009. In case humor helps, here are the prep highlights from olden times - I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a prescription f...

Re: Sciatic nerve irritation from radiation?

I didn't have sciatica during chemo-rad, but have had some issues. They were primarily when I had ureteral stents. It was intermittent, but, at points, incapacitating. Before the stints, I remember my first post-op going over scans and reports with the surgeon because of pains in my upper legs. We c...
