Re: Update on gofisch (Frances) - 10/16

My system was also very slow to start up after my reversal surgery. It took 7 days and was really frustrating. I am sorry to hear she has pain and discomfort. At least I felt ok while I was waiting for things to restart.

Re: Negative for Lynch

I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade but getting a negative Lynch test doesn't mean you don't have a genetic component to your cancer. If you don't have any additional family history to go with the negative Lynch results you are probably clear from a genetic standpoint but it is not certain. I a...

Re: Foods to eat with an Illeostomy

The main restriction on your diet after an ileostomy is for the first 6-8 weeks after the surgery. There is swelling from the surgery which increases your risk of a blockage. Once the swelling goes down you can start adding some of the stuff back into your diet. Be sure to add things carefully and i...

Re: How to support my brother-in-law.

BrownBagger makes a good point. Not everyone is ready to deal with all the possibilities right away. However, being a private person myself I often found it easier to talk to people on the web than I did face to face. I would suggest you do something like the following. Tell him you have done some c...

Re: Illeostomy reversal tomorrow

Brenda, Good luck with your reversal. For me the reversal was a breeze compared to the resection. I want to let you know there are plenty of us that have had reversals and DON'T have problems. My reversal was done in April of 2007 and I now eat whatever I want. As matter of fact I am now in Puerto R...

Re: Life Insurance

I have a life insurance policy after getting dx with crc. I had to be out of treatment for 6 months and the first few years the death benefit is pretty small. In year one it is just equal to the premiums paid. Each year after that it increases until it reaches the full face amount I think in year 5....

Re: Need some Support

Lisa, I am so sorry to hear about your friend. I have been both the cancer patient and the caregiver and being a caregiver is so much harder. I wish I had a way to make it easier but nothing really helps when you have to watch someone you care about suffer. Of course you are having a hard time with ...

Re: How to Cope?

I struggled with the same thing. I wanted to stay connected with the friends I had made on the board but the bad news was getting to me. I took a break for a while and focused on living. I also took that time to think about how I could deal with the bad news because it was always going to be there. ...

Re: Newbie - mom just diagnosed

I am sorry to hear about your mom. Waiting to find out just what you are facing is always hard and you tend to think the worst. All of us on the board will tell you we hate to wait for test results. Early stage CRC is very treatable. Since your mom is in good health otherwise she should be able to h...

Re: Newbie here. Hopeful and scared at the same time.

Victoria, Welcome to the Colon Club. One of the best things about the folks here is that they understand what you are going through because they have been done that same road. Some things are hard for people to understand unless they have been though it themselves. Feel free to vent or ask questions.

Re: Blood in Stool

Yes, it could be hemiroids or a fissure. You are doing the right thing by getting it checked. Blood in the stool should always be checked. Don't panic but do keep the doctor appointment.

Re: Adult Kids of Cancer Patients

Oh yeah, family dynamics can make the whole situation even harder. When my mom got too sick to stay in her house by herself she chose to go to my brother's house. My sister resented the fact that it was our sister-in-law taking care of mom instead of one of her daughters. That was the start of a fal...

Re: Adult Kids of Cancer Patients

I didn't mean to imply that everyone needs to talk with a hospice worker to deal with end of life issues. They are just there if you want to talk with them. Having hospice care is a very personal choice but here locally it is almost impossible to stay at home unless you have it. My experience with h...

Re: Adult Kids of Cancer Patients

From what I've read in several medical journals, one of the most challenging aspects of being a doctor who specializes in a field where death is common is learning how to help people know and come to peace with it being time to stop. Some people get there on their own, but it seems a lot of people ...

Re: Adult Kids of Cancer Patients

I lost my mom to cancer a few years ago. When she decided not to have treatment I was the first one she talked to about it. It was one of the hardest things I had to do to accept that it was her choice to make. It was not the choice I wanted her to make. Her initial decision was made out of fear and...
