Re: family and expectations

My family was amazing! It was my (soon to be ex) husband who couldn't be there for me. Through all of this, you learn what people are capable of. I am sorry you are feeling rejected. Try not to take it personally. Some people just don't know how to behave in a responsible, supportive way. Get your s...

Re: The kindness of others

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story! I remember when I was going through treatments, I really had a hard time accepting anything from anyone. But then I think back on my life, and remember all of the times that I had done similar things for people in difficult situations, and I tried to swall...

Re: How long after finishing chemo do you start to feel bett

From my experience, it comes and goes as far as energy levels. There were times, even several months after chemo ended, that I just wanted to lay in bed all weekend and watch TV. It drove my husband crazy because I wasn't back to my normal self, even after all of my treatments were done. When we wer...

Re: What are your Summer plans?

After finally recovering from the financial burden of my cancer treatments last year, I just booked a cruise to Alaska for next month! I haven't taken more than a day off from work for "vacation" since before I was diagnosed because all of my vacation/sick time had to go towards my surgery...

Elevated Liver Numbers

At my last check up I had been off chemo for eight months, yet my liver numbers were still elevated. My doctor was surprised they hadn't gone back to normal after being off chemo so long, but he is taking the "wait and see" approach, and will test me again at my next check up to see if it ...

Re: Co-payments for infusion sessions and disconnects

I only paid co-pays for doctor visits, not for treatements. So I would pay my co-pay on infusion day because I saw my doc prior to hook up. This also applied to my accupuncture and massage treatments. At first I was paying a co-pay with each visit. Then I spoke with my insurance company and learned ...

Re: mamo-xiety!!!

I think that the doctors are more cautious when someone has a previous cancer diagnosis. I don't get scan-xiety, but I feel like my docs do! I had my first mammo last October, and they called me an hour later to see if I could come back that afternoon. I was too busy with work and didn't feel like d...

Re: stomach crunches with ileostomy

You are brave! I used my cancer diagnosis as an excuse to have a year of no work outs  I sort of regretted it after the fact because I had zero muscle definition on my body, but at the time I couldn't get myself out of bed to do much of anything besides going to work during the week. I started ...

Re: Ileostomy reversal and terrible incontinence...

I was like you, and thought everything would be back to normal in no time, so was very discouraged when I was still having problems several weeks/months later. I usually wore Depends every night while I slept, and used extra long maxi-pads every day for several months. I thought it would never get b...

Re: Sort of O/T - stupid people in our provider's office

It can be so frustrating! I was sent to collections (for the first time in my life!!!) for a $30 co-pay that I had already paid, but they applied it to the facility charge instead of the provider charge. After several round-and-round phone calls, I thought I had everything sorted out until I got the...

Re: 2013: Survivor stories

Today is National Dress in Blue Day, and I kicked it off by having my one-year post surgery colonoscopy this morning. Clean as a whistle! No new polyps, nothing to worry about! I was diagnosed on October 5, 2011 and went through about a year of treatment before I finally started calling myself a sur...

Re: Adjuvant Chemo for Rectal Cancer - how many rounds

I did 9 rounds of Oxi/5FU.

He told me I'd need 6 months of chemo, but he counted the 6 weeks of chemo-radiation (Xeloda) I did prior to surgery, so 9 adjuvant chemo treatments = 4.5 months.

Re: Neuropathy solutions?

I am 6 months out from chemo, and my doctor keeps telling me that the only thing that will treat my neurthapy is "time". I thought it would be getting better by now, but it hasn't. I tried accupuncture , but it didn't help with the neurothapy (but did help me relax, and I believe that it h...

Re: Fresh fruit and veggies

I was told no fresh veggies, or fruits (unless the skin was removed) too. Partly because of concerns about bacteria, partly because of my illeostomy

I never thought I'd miss fress produce so much - now I can't get enough of it!

Re: New and scared from Oregon

Hi Polo - Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I don't know of any support groups on Salem, but coincidentally I am going to be in South Salem visiting family this weekend, so if you want to meet for a cup of coffee I would be happy to offer some in-person support. Send me a PM if interested and we can ...
