Re: New, recently diagnosed and a million questions

Susan, On your questions ... Perhaps write down the list of people who will be your "team" in your recovery from cancer. Maybe a family member (or two), a doctor or even clergy; your wider support group can include this on line community. Try to choose people who are frequently available, ...

Re: Tim, do you feel like giving us an update on how you are

Tim, Glad to hear of your improvement. DCA has been helpful for many with crc, with some people combining it with LDN: http://www.ldndatabase.com/ourstory.html You said in a separate post that you did not want to give up. As for graduating from hospice, it has been done by several people, one of whi...

Re: I'm a Newbie

Sherry, In 2005, my 9 cm tumor was very close to the rectum; the cancer had spread throughout the liver ("too many lesions to bother counting"). As you begin down this road, be open minded and learn as much as you can, so you can build a homecare plan that works for you and compliments the...

Re: Getting written off for hospice

Tim, If you do not want to give up, then don't. Changing one's approach to advanced cancer sometimes works. There are many real stories of stage4 people who have been cured -- after the docs have given up (spontaneous remission). Read a few stories at stage4hope.com. The most dramatic story is that ...

Tim: If you are open to clinical trials, there are a few options to consider, details at http://www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials : 1) ALN-VST is in phase I (biotech company around Boston); EARLY REPORTS ENCOURAGING. 2) "hedgehog" pathway has a trial at Johns-Hopkins (Baltimore); 3) PARPs avai...

Re: Comprehensive survivor study?

Ralpha Moss at http://www.cancerdecisions.com has the most organized and scientifically screened information I have seen. He is on the NCI panel that studies "Complementary and alternate methods." His PDF on colon cancer is 500 pages and costs $300 -- best money I ever spent. Covers all co...

Re: CEA's are teasing us! Anyone experience this?

Your question is best answered in two ways 1) as a fellow patient and 2) in a scientific/stats manner. 1. As a patient who looks at your CEA data, you feel lower is better. In general this is right. But also look at other blood parameters for the organs involved. If liver mets are involved, sometime...

Re: My mother and our family got devasting news yesterday

Jan, There are different perspectives on how to approach cancer. Yours will be a bit different from anyone else's, but do what comes naturally to your (and her) personality and skills. Listen to many people, but do what is right for you. In my 6th year at stage4, here's my take: Don't waste a moment...

Re: Here we go again-New Chemo Plan-China Study Diet

Candy, Yes, I've done lots of Fulfiri + Erbitux. Also, do an alkaline-vegetarian diet. Doing both now. One tough week (Camptosar aka Irinioptecan). Powerful chemo but it works -- and will for you. You're in our prayers. For me: Baby oil helps the skin from getting too dry. Immodium and metamucil hel...

Re: CEA question again

If you are a person who likes to chart and analyze chemo/cancer data, a few thoughts: A circulating tumor cell (CTC) blood test is a useful marker, best done about every 8 weeks. The number of CTC per 7.5 ml of blood should be less than 3. Also, for "low-CEA-expressing" tumors, such as you...

Re: Monitoring for Recurrence

Nicola: The Circulating Tumor Cell (CTC) test was FDA approved in ~2002 (Johnson & Johnson). Quest Diagnostics is one USA-wide (global?) lab that does the test; other large labs in the USA do it as well. My oncologist recommends the test be done every 6 weeks (which I do). CTC is proven effectiv...

Re: Monitoring for Recurrence

On your question about a monitoring approach, here is what has worked for me. I am a numbers guy, enjoy stats, math, spreadsheets and charts . Maybe you are not that kind of person -- but have a friend who is? If charting your data is not "your cup of tea" please stop reading this response...
