Re: Bad news on scans. Advise welcome

Folks should be aware that the doctor mentioned here, Frank Shallenberger, is very problematic. He lost his license in CA and pled guilty to medical malpractice in a case in which his tx of a colon cancer patient contributed to his death. https://faculty.uml.edu/sgallagher/california_medical_board_c...

Re: Who are the longest stage 4 survivor's on here?

Haven't been here for years but thought I'd pop in to post an update to this thread. I no longer see an oncologist and haven't had any treatment since Dec. 2011. My cancer was extensive but luckily never got into major organs such as the liver or lungs. My survival was down to some great surgeons, c...

Re: O/T ... don't know if I should share this ?????

My kids, including one who is in her 20s, have been doing it and having a lot of fun.

It's getting people out and walking around. Seems like a good thing.

Re: Rare Colon Cancer Metastasis to Uterus

That's really interesting about left vs. right - my cancer was on the left side, too. I had to look up that blood vessel that goes to the liver - the Portal Vein. It does have some offshoots that connect to the left side colon, but much fewer than the right side. And, when you have a resection, tho...

Re: Rare Colon Cancer Metastasis to Uterus

I'm no expert on any of this, but my understanding is that usually the liver involvement occurs when cancer cells from a right-sided tumor move through the large blood vessel that connects the intestines to the liver on that side of the body. That's very different from having a surgical floater land...

Re: Rare Colon Cancer Metastasis to Uterus

I had my uterus removed due to a crc met. My surgeon assumed it was a floater that got away during a previous surgery. I had several of these on different areas in the abdomen, all of which were taken out in a series of surgeries. HIs opinion was that this kind of localized spread was less ominous t...

Re: Petscan result not good UPDATED

Thanks, Anna. I felt it was a long shot for surgery to be helpful in my case. Cell type is mucinous, which studies have shown to be aggressive. When I got home today I wanted to call my onc and just go back on chemo. The devil you know and all that...I have a lot of fear about the consequences of t...

Re: Petscan result not good UPDATED

I was in your shoes in the fall of 2010. I was on my third recurrence, and told by my surgeon that he would be doing surgery that would be strictly palliative because things were such a mess (I was bleeding internally so it wasn't an option to skip it). I ended up having a much more successful surge...

Re: recurrence (peritoneal mets, I think); any tips?

I'm so very sorry. I really wish the news had been better. Sometimes people are major responders to chemo, and even extensive spread can be beaten back. I hope your dad will fall into that category, if that's the path he chooses to take.

Big hugs coming to you both.

Re: recurrence (peritoneal mets, I think); any tips?

I would def ask why surgery is off the table. And if you're not content with the answer, get a 2nd opinion if you can. I've known people who had to go to three or four surgeons before finding one who would take their case, and a couple of those folks are stage 4ers who have lived way past their &quo...

Re: recurrence (peritoneal mets, I think); any tips?

Do you know yet how many peritoneal mets there are? I had several removed through standard surgery, no HIPEC. My onc wasn't a fan of it, as he feels it's very harsh and doesn't often get good results. However, if there is significant peritoneal "seeding", then HIPEC can be a reasonable cho...

Re: 2nd year caregiver jitters-CAREGIVERS ONLY

I don't know if this will help, but 80% of all cancers don't recur in two years...80% of the recurrences that do occur are within the first two years (so in other words, if a recurrence happens, it's likely to be within two years). Recurrence rates vary depending on stage, and are much lower than 80...

Kenny and I are admins of the group. There isn't really much in the way of requirements, except that we ask that people wanting to join give us a brief overview of their cancer history, whether as patient or caregiver (this was part of an effort to reduce spam). In a more general sense, we encourage...

Re: Stage I to NED to Stage IV in less than a year

There are people on this board who have been NED after stage 4 for many years (including myself). And with only one liver met, you are actually well-placed for a surgical cure imo (there's a term for this that you can research..."Oligometastasis"). I would suggest getting a 2nd opinion asa...

Re: It's back

I just want to say thank you again to everyone who responded. As an update, my mother is going to get a second opinion on HIPEC as her cancer center does not do it. Her CRC surgeon said that because she has been through chemo and also had radiation on the abdominal area (where her surgeon was unabl...
