Re: Poor bowel habits/long term colostomy

I also have an upper GI specialist for other reasons and he may be the best person to speak to - I have an appointment in ten days. He is also very slow to admit a problem, he has not wanted to follow anything up either - in fact I just had an iron infusion after he ordered bloods in November. My fe...

Re: Bone Density / Females

No long term side effects from radiation? WTF? Of course there are. It was clearly explained to me ten years ago that I would be at an increased risk of other cancers such as gynaecological cancers as a result of the radiation exposore. My Jpouch failed due to radiation damage. I have terrible bowel...

Poor bowel habits/long term colostomy

Interested in hearing about people's long term bowel function after radiation. By way of brief review, I had rectal cancer ten years ago, had ULAR after chemo radiation, then six moths 5FU, thankfully all cured. My ileostomy was reversed but that eventually failed, I developed obstruction and could ...

Re: Did anyone ever decide to go back to ileostomy after reversal

I went back for a permanent colostomy two years later. For me, the only acceptable outcome after all my treatment was over was normal bowel function. My surgeon spoke about eight bowel movements a day and never sitting through Titanic again as if that wasnt a big deal. I hated it, it made life miser...

Re: What can I do about diarrhea-like cramps?

I hate to say it but this has been a constant companion for me in the ten years since my ultra low anterior resection. Just diarrhoea cramps, a bit like period pain every time you eat. My bowel movements are also more often than not completely liquid. I have tried every combination of diet, fibre, i...

Re: Daily Enema Therapy for LARS

I managed an obstruction problem for about 18 months with enemas. I had progressively worsening radiation damage which lead to obstructed defecation - I need an enema to go a t all, so I was not a typical post ULAR patient at all. However I found the enema process effective but a major drain on my q...

Re: Rectal cancer

I was diagnosed with a low rectal tumour in 2010 at the age of 42. I've so much gotten on with my life that I barely visit here anymore. I was T2N0M0, had a complete response to radiation, had surgery and 6 months of chemo and have had all clean colonoscopies since. However, I'd say it had a fairly ...

Re: Xeloda/IMRT Radiation Side Effetcs? Rectal Cancer

Immediate side effects were very minimal for me, maybe because I went in very fit, a healthy weight and not sick from having cancer. I needed a bit of nausea relief and that was it. I did lose alarming amounts of weight it literally fell off me. 10kg over the six weeks, without any diarrhoea, vomiti...

Re: One piece or two piece appliance?

Its such a personal thing. For me, it was one piece all the way for both ileostomy and colostomy - drainable for the ileostomy, closed for the colostomy. I'm lucky that in Australia, our scheme is very generous so I put on a clean pouch every morning (even if there's been absolutely no output overni...

Re: 9yrs later..

Funny, I dropped it in today after literally years too. Congrats on your good results - I probably dropped in because I just had a scan and bloodwork after seven years. It was supposed to be my last one, I had the scan and headed off to Thailand for a holiday. One night I sat bolt upright in the mid...

Re: LAR surgery - what to expect

Also on a positive side note.. How does a cancer DX change your life or lifestyle. For me I'm thinking about selling all my investments, getting that fishing boat that I want, the 4wd I want and doing some house renovations for the family. Hey I might not see it through until 50 but why not enjoy l...

Re: LAR surgery - what to expect

I always hesitate to answer this type of question because I really don't want to sound flippant, but I found ULAR really pretty easy. I had youth (42) and a very good physical fitness on my side, I was not overweight and I qualified for laparascopic surgery, nor was I yet sick, weakened or otherwise...

Re: Well there goes the hair!

I thought about this a lot - thinking about cancer was way too scary so I focussed on how I'd handle losing my hair instead. I know for me, I'd be a wig wearer. I am pretty fussy about hair. I am happy to spend $200 on a cut and colour every six weeks. I blow dry and straighten daily. I am blessed w...

Re: Random dull side pain

I have a complete catalogue of abdominal pains that I get now, some years post cancer surgery. The one I find most bothersome is the left side stitch after eating. I've learned to size my meals so that I stop a smidge before a full stomach. Past a certain point and I get a stitch in my side that is ...

Re: Bowel obstruction

Chemo caused this problem for me too - I think I had 3 hospitalisations. They werent bad ones, but the first two times, I had a reduction in the 5FU (I had 24 weekly IV doses prescribed). The third time happened after the 18th dose and my onc decided to just finish me there. I was a stage II though.
