Re: Stage 2

Hi, I'm a stage IIa that has almost gone 5 years without a recurrence (had scare in 2009). I usually check in about once a year and noticed your thread. Here's the best available info I had about IIa recurrences in 2008 when my onc and I decided on a surveillance plan (annual PET/CT, 6 month CEA). C...

Re: Do any of you men get hot flashes from chemo?

Not sure what hot flashes entail, but drenching night sweats were common almost every night after the first few cycles. The bed was soaked - worse than if someone had gone directly from the shower to bed. As soon as they stopped I threw away the pillows, sheets, and mattress protectors (one daughter...

Re: Has anyone had Oxaliplatin discontinued?

Also had oxi stopped because of breathing issues. I was coughing a lot at the start of round 8 and felt like crap. It went away after a while and I don't think I even told the nurse. Round 9 same thing started soon after they added the oxi and was more severe - felt as if I had run a marathon and wa...

Re: Local Recurrence

Thanks both of you for the info. I'll have a lot of questions for the surgeon this week and will definitely ask if I should be referred to a surgical oncologist. I suspect that even if the PET is a false positive that I'll need surgery anyway because whatever is there is constricting my bowels. It w...

Local Recurrence

Hi, Just got back PET results showing a local recurrence and so I'll be meeting with the surgeon as soon as I can next week. Anything special I should be asking about? I don't know much about the circumstances at this point other than I look clean from the inside from a colonoscopy a few days ago - ...

Re: Vitamin B6 and Nueropathy?

My chemo nurses suggested B6, but I don't know if it really works or not. I found that most of my pain and numbness until the real neuropathy set in after round 9 was attributable to residual cold sensitivity from the oxi. Your fingers are losing heat in any temperature below body temperature. Weari...

Re: oxaliplatin neuropathy

Its perfectly normal for the neuropathy to get worse after treatment ends. There was no neuropathyat the end of my 9th cycle (oxi), but it started 6 weeks later after a long break due to chemo-induced diarrhea and before I ever had another infusion (cycles 10-12 were just 5-FU/Leukovorin). It got wo...

They can also go up if he is taking either Tylenol or Percoset. If taking either of these even in small quantities he should ask about switching pain meds.

Re: advice for treatment

Be sure to clear any supplements with your oncologist. Chemo and the anti-nausea drugs can be a delicate balance of medicines once they get you set straight and you don't want interactions or risk reducing the effectiveness of the chemo.

Good luck with your treatments,

Re: Stage 2 Folfiri instead of Folfox?

Treatment for Stage II (including IIA) is still an area of disagreement with oncologists. The studies I was aware of when I made the decision in Jan 2007 (based on Mosaic?) indicated that the potential benefits of oxi for stage IIA were within the margins of error of the study, so it couldn't be sai...

Re: Got the Bad News Today

Tim, That sucks. Hopefully they have good options for you. mpeters- It really isn't all that shocking to see a recurrence in Stage IIA. Stage IIA has about a 25% recurrence rate without chemo and just a few percentage points better with it. In fact, chemo doesn't appear to affect survival, just the ...

Re: subcutaneous mets

Seems to make sense to get the CT before leaping in, but unless there is a really good reason I'd want those cancer peas out of my body asap. One way cancer spreads is by shedding cells and it can't spread any more if it has been cut out.

Good luck,

Re: ANYONE NOT GET THROUGH ALL 12 FOLFOX TREATMENTS?

Also had that terrible burning liquid diarrhea accompanied by intense stomach cramping in my fourth cycle. I don't remember the prescription drug that they gave me, but the over the counter stuff just made the problem worse. I know Bentyl was the drug that stopped the cramps and that I was told to s...
