Re: 10 Years and Counting

Good to hear from you and congratulations. It's going on 14 years, for me, after a less interesting 2a rectal cancer.

Re: Happy 14 year cancerversary to me

Thanks for recalling your inspiring cancer adventure for us. I'm coming up on my 13th, after a rather routine and uninteresting experience with stage 2 rectal cancer.

I doubt that it is very important. Unless someone has an authoritative source, I'll consider it a rumor.

Re: Rectal Cancer: Is chemotherapy advisable for 68 years old Heart patient after LAR surgery

I had chemotherapy at 63. Not a problem (but I don't have heart trouble). I think you had best follow the advice of his doctors. Bear in mind that people have very different reactions to chemotherapy, and in case of a bad reaction, the therapy can be modified or stopped.

Re: Still worried after finding Hemorrhoids

If I were you, I'd still be nervous. After seeing blood in my stool, I went to my doctor, who looked inside my anus and diagnosed hemorrhoids. But he also mentioned the possibility of a colonoscopy. I decided to get one, but it took several months to schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist...

Follow your doctor's advice. She's the expert; not you.

Re: 20 years old, extremely worried.

I'd guess that rectal cancer is unlikely. But do get that colonoscopy, preferably from a gastroenterologist, who may be able to treat whatever you have going on in your bowel.

Re: Rectal Cancer - Standard of Care Approach or Neoadjuvant Chemo approach???

With stage 2 rectal cancer 5 cm above the anal verge, I had first surgery, then radiation and 5fu chemo. It worked fine. In your shoes, I'd follow my oncologist's recommendation (which is what I did).

Re: Having open colorectal surgery 11/09/2017

I felt like I was in the way and I also hated walking the hallways because you could see and hear all of the sad and sick people. It was very depressing. Where did you all walk? Is there someplace else besides the hallway outside of your room? Are we able to leave our floor of the hospital and walk...

Re: Having open colorectal surgery 11/09/2017

The surgeon is doing "open" surgery because the 4 cm cancer is in the lower colon and upper rectum and he thinks with the open surgery it will give me a better chance to avoid a colostomy. If any one here has had the open surgery, could you please share your experience in terms of recover...

Re: New and husband just diagnosed

Of course I asked all kinds of questions and we are being referred to a colorectal surgeon next week to see if it is even operable. The doctor that did the scope didn't seem too hopeful at all and I am just devastated. He said there may not be a cure but there would be treatment. I feel like this i...

Re: Chemoradiation AFTER resection

I too had chemoradiation after surgery for rectal cancer. Well, before surgery, it appeared that I had colon cancer, rather than rectal cancer -- that's why. No ostomy. No sign of cancer since the surgery.

Re: Just told I have a mass in rectum

This all sounds pretty familiar -- pretty much what happened to me in late November of 2005. Mine was stage 2a rectal cancer, found by a colonoscopy. After surgery, radiation, and chemo, for me, there's been no further sign of the cancer since. Try not to worry.

On those rare occasions when I've looked in here in recent years, I always scanned for posts from Eric. He generally had something interesting and gentle. I wish I had met him in person.

Re: Blood on surface of stool and very weird stool shape (help!)

Get a colonoscopy from a gastroenterologist. Even if your doctor thinks that rectal cancer is a low probability, I think you should insist. I had such symptoms in 2005, diagnosed by my pcp as hemorrhoids. But a half year later, I learned it was cancer. Of course, it's perfectly possible to have bot...
