Re: 60 Minutes story

Grouseman, excellent response. It is easy and common to sensationalize the issue and oversimplify the complex factors at play. Do I think there is trouble in the industry - Yes. Its run too much by MBA's Sales/Marketing, and Lawyers now. Use to be run by doctors, and researchers, that learned to bec...

Re: Anyone (besides me) have an autoimmune disease?

Hello Bev et al, I don't have any deep thoughts on autoimmune diseases. The immune system is incredibly complicated, and I suspect that like cancer there are a plethora of potential genetic and epigenetic causes even for well-classified diseases such as Type 1 diabetes. In my case, I'm sure all my a...

Re: watching the World Cup...

Youth soccer of course is immensely popular but there is no route to the high levels. It's all about the kids enjoying themselves, having a good time and being active, for the most part anyway. And having coached here in Canada I can say the skill level at all ages just does not compare to other pa...

Re: 34y colon metatstatic peritoneal with signet cells

I'm very sorry to hear your news. I agree with others that you should consult with a specialist in signet cell cancers, which I believe most commonly start in the Appendix. The good news is that there are specialists in Ontario in HIPEC (see http://www.mshfoundation.ca/Page.aspx?pid=1575) as well as...

Re: I need help: Doctor recommended Colectomy

Sorry to hear about the dysplasia. About 2 years after a stage IIIc cancer diagnosis and right hemicolectomy for a tumor found in the cecum (where your dysplasia is), I had a routine colonoscopy and 2 DALMS (dysplasia associated lesions) were found. One GI specialist recommended watching it, which m...

Re: UP-DATE ON KATHRYN FINN-BLUME

Best wishes to you and your family Kathryn. You have handled all the adversity that has been unjustly thrust your way with such grace. It is great to hear you are not suffering too much. Perhaps you can think of the great time you have spent with family on warm Isla Mujeres when things are hard. God...

Re: Night sweats- yuck!

In my experience night sweats indicated an abscess (infection). I know that your doc isn't too concerned but please have it further investigated without delay.

Mine too, though I also had a mild fever that would spike in the late afternoon/evening.

Keep your eyes open.

Re: Update to update

Welcome to Vermont Bev! In my unbiased opinion, it is just about the nicest state in the union. I have only passed through Quechee briefly to visit the gorge, but it seems like a lovely place to settle. I think it is good to get a new perspective on your husband's lymphoma. Hopefully a fresh view wi...

Re: Blog about lack of cancer funding

How about the general funding of basic science? Discretionary spending on science+health research is typically 10 times lower than the spending directed towards the military. http://www.globalresearch.ca/more-than-50-of-us-government-spending-goes-to-the-military/18852 I don't think priorities are i...

Re: SUGAR

Chip (gfpiv), we have both been on the soapbox before about IGF and its role in cancer growth. To mount on my soapbox, it is the glycemic response to food that must be monitored. Many people don't realize what factors influence the glycemic load in foods. Type I diabetics like myself and Bev pay car...

Re: New here.....lung and bone mets

Since you had a CT in 2011, the radiologist can compare your latest scan with the earlier one. I suspect the bone island (if it is that) was there in the earlier scan and didn't warrant mention. I understand your anxiety, but if 3 radiologists looked at the scan and they agree the lesion is benign t...

Re: fatty liver & CEA question - please share

The percentages and inter vs intra were way over my head. Can you explain it for me? Sure. The article examines the reliability of various cancer markers by looking at how values of the markers are distributed in healthy individuals in two different ways. The intra-individual data from a 6 week per...

Re: fatty liver & CEA question - please share

Many of us veteran have worried about CEA values from individual tests over the years, myself included. In 2010, I had a spike in my CEA level and worried about what it meant. The short answer was, fortunately, "not very much". At my 1.3 year post-surgery checkup, my CEA suddenly rose 50% ...

Re: High grade dysplasia - need advice

After 32 years of well managed UC, I have been diagnosed with high grade dysplasia in the upper colon. I have seen 2 internal medicine specialists and boapsy reviewed by 2 different pathologists. The recommendations were to have the colon removed, a consult with a surgeon also confirmed the diagnos...
