Re: The stigma of cancer

I hate it. Outside of family and my closest friends I didn't tell a lot of people about my surgery/treatment. I didn't want people treating me differently, feeling sorry for me, etc. Not knocking for people that do otherwise. That's just what I did.

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

One of the many things I learned from this 7+ year journey for me, is that while the doctors know a lot about cancer, there is a lot they don't know. Statistics are helpful in determining the plan of action, but a person is an individual, not a statistic. Personally what has helped me has been to m...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Thank you, I've generally been okay between him coming home after surgery up until the past week. Now I just keep feeling so overwhelmed with worry. A few months ago we were planning our wedding, now I'm just praying we make it through this with as few side effects as possible and it doesn't come b...

Re: What did you drink on FOLFOX??

Forgot to mention that Oxi also gave me "first bite pain". I read on here that swishing Apple Juice in your mouth before eating would help. Don't know if that's true or not but I did it and got used to drinking that during treatment.

Re: Stage 3B Colon Cancer - Lurking Here - Have some questions

#2 we call that "scanxiety". I was always a nervous wreck before scans but I always felt better knowing afterwards.

Make sure to tell your oncologist about the neuropathy. He dialed back my Oxi dosage when I did.

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Totally get that, we feel the same. Surgery is one thing but once it's done (in most cases and after recovery) it's done. Chemo is likely to be 6 months of unknowns  and it won't end after 6m for us... As we'll then have to wait another 6m to see whether he's fertile or not. In 1 way I feel li...

Re: Port Out...for now

Hope it's out forever boxhill! I took my 1st infusion in my left hand. No fun, I was not allowed to use that left hand for several days. Had to sleep a certain way. I finally got my port put in a day or two prior to my 2nd infusion. Anyway, I was willing to keep as long as possible, just in case. Oh...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Honestly that's so true. In the UK, we have a Macmillan nurse (a cancer charity that provides specialist support to cancer patients and families, supports us through the process)... She has said that younger people often tolerate treatment (surgery and chemo) better than older people, so we are bei...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Thank you, totally sympathise - the stats create so much anxiety, even when they're pretty good I convince myself he'll fall into the worst case! 100%, that's so true, all stats and research papers are often about people older than my husband! One of the times I was feeling sorry for myself and com...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

I was stage 3 and went through resection and chemo also. Every single time I looked up charts with any statistics (survival, recurrence, etc) it only accomplished one thing: causing me tremendous worry and anguish. I got to the point where I decided I was going to deal with anything bad that came up...

Re: What did you drink on FOLFOX??

I was XELOX, but had the metal taste and cold sensitivity. It got to the point where I was microwaving water because what came from the tap was too cold for me.

I was in the best shape of my life when I got my diagnosis. I still sometimes can't believe it happened. Keep your head up and keep fighting. You'll get a lot of support here.

Your English skills are superb.

Waiting is just the absolute worst. Especially at the start of the journey.
