Re: What is it with CEA levels?

When I had colon cancer stage III, my CEA levels were always normal. When diagnosed with pancreatic cancer my CEA and CA 19-9 were not only normal but at the lowest level of normal even tho I was Stage IV with a large met on the liver. However after a year and a half the both rose to abnormal high l...

Immunotherapy clinical trial

I will be starting a clinical trial next week of Mogamulizumab and either Tremelimumab or MEDI4736 immunotherapy to see if it will encourage immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. Have any of you been on this protocol, and if so, what were the side effects, and response to treatment? I...

Re: Positive Lynch Syndrome Results

20% of people with Lynch Syndrome never develop any cancer so their life expectancy is not affected by it. Persons with Lynch Syndrome following the recommended preventive testing and scanning may catch an incipient cancer at its earliest stage or as a precancer when it is easiest to treat. Then the...

Have you had any Neupogen injections? When I had very low counts I was given Neupogen which is faster acting than Neulasta. If you get either of them be sure to take Claritin to prevent/lessen any aches and pains from the injection.

Re: Chemo question - no leucovorin

When I was on Folfirinox for the last several treatments the Leucovorin and bolus 5FU were discontinued. When I asked why, I was told that it was found to be ineffective and not necessary, that the 48 hour 5FU was enough. Somewhere there must be a research study to back up this change in protocol, b...

Re: Liver Embolization - PES

With pancreatic cancer, they don't do resections if it's Stage IV since it's then considered a systemic disease and not curable. My met is in an area where if I had colon cancer it would be considered removable. There are no statistics that embolization of a liver met will prolong life, but since I ...

Liver Embolization - PES

I will be having a liver embolization next week to shrink or eliminate the blood supply to a liver met that has stopped responding to chemo and continues to grow. It is the only met that I have (that is detectable on a CAT scan). I know some of you have had chemoembolizations and would like to hear ...

Re: Cecal Mass of 5 cm and Rectal Polyps

A CAT scan of the abdomen/pelvis and chest will show if there is any additional cancer activity in other parts of the body. The CEA blood test should be done prior to surgery. It will serve as a baseline to be compared to later CEAs as treatment progresses. However, for some people it will be non re...

Re: what do the terms msh6 and other means and chemo required or not

It is unusual to be microsatellite stable and have Lynch Syndrome. One of the characteristics of Lynch Syndrome is high microsatellite instability. Since Lynch Is a dominant mutation, direct relatives, parents, siblings and children and should also be tested so a comprehensive preventative testing s...

Re: FOLFIRI and the IRI

Over what time period do you get the Irineticon? I get mine at MSKCC and it takes 30 minutes. However, when I was in Florida for the winter, treatment was at the U of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center. They give the Irineticon over a 1 to 2 hour time period to minimize side effects, but I insisted on fo...

Re: My oncologist has cancer

I have Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. I knew I was at risk for it (Dad died of it at age 78), and had yearly MRCPs as follow up on pancreatic cysts. In less than 1 year since last scan, at next scan was diagnosed with it, old cysts were unchanged, cancer was in a new growth and had already spread to th...

Re: Dexamethasone

Yes, it is one of the premeds given before a FOLFIRINOX infusion to counter side effects. It is also an energy booster. However, if you have diabetes it can cause the blood sugar to spike very high, requiring frequent blood sugar checks, adjustment of insulin dosage and decrease in amount of dexamet...

Re: High sugar levels - 4 round of chemo XELOX

Is your mother receiving steroids along with the chemo? Steroids (dexamethasone) can cause large increases in blood sugar. In addition, chemo is usually given with a glucose (sugar) solution. It would be advisable for your mother to see an endocrinologist to put her on diabetes medicine or insulin t...

Re: Really??!!??

Bev I hope it's not another cancer or any cancer at all! I certainly can empathize with your shock at what the scan showed. I too went through a sense of disbelief when 11 years after stage 3 colon cancer, and less than a year after an MRI a stage 4 pancreatic cancer with a met to the liver was reve...
