Re: Best colorectal surgeon?? Share your experience!

Second Dr. Efron at Hopkins! He also saved my butt, and, while things aren't perfect, one year post-reversal, my quality of life is immensely better than it used to be with an ileostomy. And, just like the OP, I was told by another surgeon (two, actually) that my tumor was too low and I'd need a per...

Re: That Ole Scanxiety

TheBurn, don't even get me started! I'm coming up on a year post-resection, and get scanned every three months, and every single time some 'suspicious' activity pops up that requires additional testing. Last time it was 'liver activity' that turned out to be nothing (in the meantime, I had we...

Re: Xeloda and dying your hair

My onc is old-school, and he said he wouldn't recommend hair-dying for chemo patients, when I asked. He said something along the lines of "Well, if you decide to color, prepare to walk around with green hair" . I decided not to risk it and lived with a painfully visible 'skank li...

What to do with unused ostomy supplies?

Hello, everyone, I'm wondering what to do with unused ileostomy supplies - I have a couple of boxes of one-piece Convatec bags, two-piece pre-cut Hollisters, plus a number of different samples. I don't need them anymore, but I'm sure someone might find them useful. Where do I donate the supplies? I'...

Re: Xelox and nausea

I've been on Xeloda only twice and also had four rounds of Xelox, with Oxi infusions every three weeks. In my experience, it's the Oxi that causes major nausea. Xeloda alone made me queasy (morning-sickness style), it was uncomfortable, but tolerable. I never threw up while on Xeloda. With Xelox, de...

Re: When to get Port removed?

I've also been considering having my port removed, since I'm technically through with intravenous chemo. However, I'll be having an ileostomy reversal in the spring, so I figured, I'd keep the port in until after that surgery. After my APR in August I developed complications that landed me back in t...

Re: Tough Recovery from LAR surgery

So sorry you are going through this, and I can definitely relate. I had open surgery for rectal cancer that went well, I was discharged within five days and also thought the recovery would be straightfoward. 6 weeks, no big deal, right? No such luck. I developed a number of complications and was rea...

Re: Second Opinions

Spring, I got a second and a third surgical opinion before going in for surgery for low-lying rectal cancer (one opinion was from a surgeon at Cleveland Clinic whose name was given to me by a local surgeon whom I saw for my very first visit). All it took was a phone call to make an appointment, and ...

When I was nauseated during chemo, I drank a lot of regular Coca-cola. Don't now why, but it seemed to help.

Re: Chemo brain and fatigue

For me, fatigue was - and still is - a bigger issue than chemo brain. I had my last round of Xelox in June and I'm just starting to feel somewhat closer to normal (I also had surgery in August and post-surgical complications in September, and that didn't help). I still get tired very easily, though....

Re: NG Tube and Catheter - Pain for LAR? Advice please

I was quite worried that I would have a NG tube, but I didn't. I think many docs will try to avoid them if possible. I can also tell you that the removal of the JP drain was no big deal. No pain at all, just a really odd sensation as it was pulled. It was over within 5 seconds. Can't speak to cathe...

Re: Xelox for CRC - Experiences of cycle and infusion stage?

Oh, and I forgot to say, that I never developed any hand/foot syndrome whatsoever with Xeloda, and I also didn't have any GI issues with it. It's the Oxi that was hard on me.
