Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

I remember being where you both are in the journey. The thing that would upset me the most was the thought of something happening to me and my niece not even remembering me. Now I'm happy to report I've done a good job being the crazy/fun uncle. There can be brighter days ahead. It's a really hard ...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Really happy he's almost done with treatment. I won't sugar coat things. That fear of it coming back is always in the back of my mind. BUT it used to be almost paralyzing and now I can go a good stretch of time without thinking about cancer. That used to seem unthinkable to me. Thank you so much an...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Cycle 4 is underway! He had his Oxaliplatin infusion on Tuesday and is currently approaching the first weekend. The 1st cycle he was really tired by the first weekend but the 2nd and 3rd cycles weren't anywhere near as bad for fatigue. We're waiting to see how this one goes but so far so good! We ar...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Thank you all for your replies since my last update and your positive stories - they are beyond helpful at keeping us strong. Nearly at the end of Cycle 3 - the tingling (due to cold) previously only lasted the first 3 days, he's found it has lasted the whole cycle this time...but not too severe and...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Update!! Cycle 2 is complete. Means we're now halfway through his chemo regime. (3m feels so much easier to comprehend than 6m!) The 2nd cycle was thankfully even better than the 1st. He had even fewer side effects (barely had any in cycle 1, just a little tingling for a few days but it stopped v qu...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Hi all, Thank you for your posts - I have read them but things have all been a bit busy over Christmas and New Year! Hope you're all well and had a nice restful festive period! My husband had his 2nd Oxaliplatin infusion this week. So far so good again, no major side effects, no neuropathy, no nause...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

UPDATE!! 1st IV infusion of Oxaliplatin this week. I made sure he went in prepped with a big coat, scarf, gloves, big 2l bottle of water, some snacks etc. I also made sure I had a hot water bottle in the car when I picked him up just in case he was extra sensitive to the cold. In short...he was (&am...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Small update: First Oxi IV infusion is on Tues 15th Dec. Then the Xeloda (Capecitabine) tablets will start that evening and finish on the morning of Day 15 (day 1 of the 7 day break). We've got prepared, he has a big warm coat, scarf and gloves at the ready. We've also roughly worked out the dates o...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Are you planning on updating this thread when he starts chemo or start a new thread? I want to make sure that I keep up with it. I think it's easier for me to update this thread...at least all of our story and worries are kept together and in one place! New people will also be able to read through ...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Thanks all for your support. Totally agree Lee (& Horizon), he's keen to do the full 6 months as it gives the best chance of it not coming back but it's comforting to know that Oxilaplatin can be reduced or stopped IF the side effects are too severe. The oncologist seems to be confident that you...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

Little update: Husband just had his Oncology appointment. His staging was: T3 N2 M0 5/21 nodes (only nodes close to the tumour site, no distant ones) Everything has been totally removed. No genetic mutations. CEA pre-op was 2.7...CEA post op was 0.6 Recommended to have 6 months of CAPOX as adjuvant ...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

45% 5 year survival rate at the time I was diagnosed in 2010. Back in the 90’s, it was more like 25-30% if I’m not mistaken. From what I can tell, it seems the current survival rate is about 55% for stage 3c. Keep in mind there’s a five year lag on survival rates and that’s because the tests and st...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

I personally would recommend a port for ANY chemo regime, especially one that involves oxaliplatin. Apparently giving it by IV does a number on one's veins in several ways. Once the port is in you can just about forget about it. No pain, does not hamper movement or activities, etc. Which side to pu...

Re: Stage 3, likelihood of recurrence after resection & chemotherapy

I had the choice between XELOX and FOLFOX. I went with XELOX. That was an infusion (several hours) of Oxi every three weeks. With FOLFOX you also have to wear a pump for a set amount of time and a port really helps with that. The unknowns and waiting is awful and I really feel for you both. For the...
