Mom is a 10 year survivor

Good news: My mother was diagnosed in 2008 and is now a 10 year survivor of Stage III CRC Bad News: She was very recently diagnosed with glioblastoma, had surgery to remove the primary tumor, will again do chemoradiation, and given only about 12-14 months to live. Is there a forum like this for brai...

OK to have colonoscopy with Ureteric stent in place?

Is it safe for a person to have a colonoscopy while a ureteric (Double J) stent is in place? Is it a risk of it being moved out of place or scratching the bladder/kidney during the procedure? My mother's urologist says it's fine. She's dealing with kidney stones, but has a colonoscopy scheduled next...

Re: Colon cancer in very elderly grandfather

We went to Sloan . My grandfather is back to the way he was now. He had the procedure done in ways to be easier on him -- a laparoscopic procedure to reduce the healing time and an epidural to make it easier on his heart. I was surprised that he had not had any complications in the hospital, except ...

Re: Colon cancer in very elderly grandfather

We met with the surgeon on Friday. The picture is not as optimistic as the gastroenterologist suggested. I could not exactly get a clear idea of what exactly the surgeon will do. He says he knows how he would go about this if my grandfather were twenty years younger. At this age, he does not know if...

Re: Colon cancer in very elderly grandfather

I've read some more articles this evening saying that surgeries in the very elderly are increasing and that age by itself is only a risk factor (as other health conditions might be) and not a prohibiting factor. See: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/517308 http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/18/health...

Re: Colon cancer in very elderly grandfather

Thank you for your very thoughtful response, hannahw -- especially about the bowel obstructions. My grandfather is a very simple man. He has been a farmer all his working life. He does not think much about details but rather the big picture. He asked the doctor how much longer could he possibly expe...

Re: Colon cancer in very elderly grandfather

I have only a little information about tumor size. One is a friable mass like thickened polyp ("tubular adenoma") at 80 cm in the transverse colon that from the photo looks like an elongated garlic clove stuck in the colon and is 2 cm in length. For the sigmoid adenocarcinoma (photo is unc...

Colon cancer in very elderly grandfather

Thank you all for your advice and comments when my mother was fighting rectal cancer 2 years ago. She is doing alright except occasionally she is bothered with frequent bathroom visits depending what and how much she eats. Now her father has been diagnosed with it. He will be 90 years old next month...

Re: CT results - clean or not so clean?

Does this also apply to things that appear almost equally and proportionally magnified between one scan and the next?

Is it anyone's experience for a node or something to appear enlarged within that margin on one scan and then appear the same or smaller on a later scan?

CT results - clean or not so clean?

The onc said my mother's CT scan this month is fine and he will see her again in six months. However, I am looking at the CT reports and I am struck by some things. Here are some excerpts: Sept '09 Abdominopelvic Nodes: A portcaval node is 1.2 x 1 cm, unchanged from prior study and small subcentimet...

Re: WBCs and Xeloda versus 5FU?

Some oncologists are not comfortable with Xeloda in combination with Oxaliplatin because it hasn't been fully studied, or because they can't collect the clinic fees, or both. Jaynee said that all the studies she saw comparing Xeloda/Oxaliplatin and FOLFOX showed that the Xeloda/Oxaliplatin was as go...

Re: Neulasta needed even if WBC are high?

I don't know if anyone was concerned but these articles/studies I found probably settle the matter: http://opd.asco.org/ASCOv2/Meetings/Abstracts?&vmview=abst_detail_view&confID=53&abstractID=10731 http://www.medpagetoday.com/MeetingCoverage/SGO/8733 Looks like it was thought that gettin...
