Re: Fecal blood test Positive

The FOBT detects blood, not cancer. The blood may have come from hemorrhoids, ulcers, or even a bloody nose. Don't freak out until you know something for sure.

Re: Homemade salad dressing recipes

I use a six-ingredient mnemonic for vinaigrettes: oil and vinegar, salt and pepper, sugar and spice. Any kind of vinegar, or lemon juice, or lilikoi (passionfruit) or other sour juice. Or a mix of two or three. Sugar, honey, or artificial sweetener. Dill or basil are my favorite herbs for the spice ...

Re: Radiation during surgery

I've never had radiation, since there is nothing to irradiate now, but given all of the side effects I've seen my husband suffer from targeted radiation after prostate cancer surgery, and all I've read about other people's post-radiation suffering, I would personally reject radiation with such a va...

Re: Radiation during surgery

Thanks, Karen.
I thought palliative care was an end of life thing, but this sounds like much more, and maybe what I need.
I'll look into it.

And thanks for the suggestion, Korysue!

Radiation during surgery

After 12 years of struggling with the after effects of rectal cancer, I recently had everything south of my colostomy removed--rectum, anus, a bunch of woody necrotic tissue, and the fissure that has plagued me for years. Actually, Plan A was to clean out the nasty tissue and reverse the colostomy. ...

Re: Lung Met = half year life?

I had lung mets; my onco said to do chemo and expect to live a couple of years.
That was 5 years ago; I got a second opinion, did surgery and chemo, and am NED.

Re: Polyps in my mid 25s

Well, you could look at this as a wake-up call. If you get your scopes regularly, polyps will be removed before they have a chance to become cancerous. So...you'll probably never get colon cancer!

and your English is excellent! Much better than my Danish.

Re: Gastro docs in Northern California?

Good Golly, Karen, thank you for your detailed reply! UCSF sounds good, but oooh, Davis would be closer! I'm going to check this out and see if I can get set up before I arrive next March or whenever. (Still have to sell this house before we can go to CA) I grew up in Sacramento, and lived in SF and...

Gastro docs in Northern California?

Can anyone recommend gastro-intestinal doc/surgeon/center in northern California? Sacramento would be ideal, but travel is possible. I'm moving to the California Gold Country next spring, and hope to hook up with a new doctor quickly, to help with leftover rectal cancer problems. I've heard there's ...

Re: not diagnosed but have some questions

Yes, definitely get it checked out. But it may not be cancer or polyps or IBS; hemorrhoids can also put blood in the stool. I had blood in stool every now and then, it wasn't every time. I had no other symptoms. After FOBT, I had a simoidoscopy, which earned me a colonoscopy. Going straight to the c...

Re: Any advice

Glad you got good test results! I had rectal pain and pain down the back of my left leg for years. Inflammation was the problem, putting pressure on nerves, tissue, even my urethra, causing urinary problems. I don't have testicles, but if I did, they probably would have hurt, too. :( I tried lots of...

Re: CT vs colonoscopy

Talk to your GI doc before the 'scope about anesthesia. They use something that leaves you awake enough to respond to questions and directions, but can black out your memory of the time. My old doc used enough that I didn't remember the procedure afterward. I think some people prefer it this way. My...
