Re: Not like the others??

Hi SBL, I'm west of New Orleans. Unfortunately, my pharmacy is the ONLY ostomy supplier approved by my ins. co, and the ONLY outfit doing ostomy stuff in the area for those with private insurance. My last supplier suggested I quit them, as I was their sole ostomate post-Katrina, and that they were g...

Not like the others??

So my pharmacy rep called to explain my pouches are still on back-order. Fine, ok, I still have some to use before things get desperate. Rep went on to say they are so difficult to obtain, have to be ordered from out-of-region, etc. THEN what got me:'Oh, and you're the only one who uses THESE bags, ...

Re: Has anyone had a colonoscopy that couldnt be done?

My last colonoscopy, in Sept. 2009, was scheduled for the day before my abdominal hernia repair, so I would only have to 'clean out' once. They put me under to scope, but had to abort it, almost immediately. The hernia was so large, it blocked access. They only got 1/3 of the way in. (Since I have a...

Re: Today . . .

Howdy All- Just wanted to say I could never think of 'leaving' this forum behind. When I was in treatment (1998-1999) I was desperate to find support for everything that was going on (surgery, radiation, chemo) in such a total whirlwind. I did go to my hospital's cancer support group, and it was hel...

Re: Today . . .

Thanks Belle. I never understood why longer-term survivors rarely post their good news, until I became one.No one wants to hurt anyone, or seem like they are gloating, in the face of the brutal struggles we know all too well. Even now, I cannot take it for granted, it cost me dearly, and it means to...

Today . . .

Today, I woke up. Today, warm, snuggled between snoring husband, and snoring cats, feeling loved. Today, I am not fearful. Today, I do not feel scarred, ugly, ashamed, shortchanged. Not today. Today, I remember. Praying, begging to live, in a CT machine, scanning my brain, wondering if I would live ...

Re: OT- So what does your username mean???

Sally 1898 is my name and my diagnosis date, January 8, 1998, the day that changed everything. It's more prominent in my memory than my birthdate,or my wedding date,or any prior surgical event date, as it is the date that altered every day that has come after it. Changed some factors for the better,...

Re: Scan coming up/does everyone lose their minds?

Yes, my annual oncology checkup (bloodwork only, no more scans) is coming up on Monday, and my mind is all over the map. Even now, many years past my diagnosis, I get squirrely. I just try to stay busy ('Busy is good' is my motto.) and don't even hope for rational.

They Said the 'O' Word!!!

Got a shock tonight. Watching TV, a commercial came on. 'Every year, thousands of people have OSTOMY surgery.' (my brain screeches: Did I just hear that??) Ad continues: 'People with OSTOMIES do all kinds of normal activities.' We at 'X' Company carry all manner of OSTOMY supplies.' Etc., etc. About...

Re: Spared by a bowel movement?

I am so proud of you for being up-front with the cop, no timidness when reality is what counts!! And glad he did have compassion, and was not too calloused to see you with humanity. I can relate. My sister drove home once, along the beach, right after learning her best friend was terminal. She drove...

Re: Hospital Food Observations

Last Fall, when I had my hernia repair, everything they brought, jello and ices, was too SWEET. Instant, severe nausea, incipient to vomiting, not what you want on fresh incisions. Had to BEG for sugar-free options, to override/avoid nausea, which they balked at, for lack of calories. How do calorie...

Re: Mystery Bleeding

I'm another Mystery Bleeder. The most they could conclude was an AVM, a malformation along the digestive tract, though they never actually found the bugger. It opens (bleeds) at will, then seals itself shut, and the bleeding stops. Have you swallowed the pill-cam, or been screened for something here...

Re: Anyone on 3 month clinical trial for 5fu?

Older drug, or not, I can't knock 5FU. It's what saved my butt. All 52 weeks of it, in 1998. As great as it is now to have shorter protocols for the newer drugs, the older ones like 5FU have stood the test of time, even if, back in the day, they had to be taken for longer periods.

Re: Relationships During Cancer - Advice Needed!

A major illness, like cancer, will test, to unimaginable extremes, the bonds of any intimate relationship, be it dating, living together, engaged, or married. A ring is no guarantee that the relationship will survive intact. I dated my first boyfriend at 22. By 23, we moved in together. Engaged at 2...
