Re: How did you break the news???

I remember I called my mom from the hospital and said, "Mom, looks like I have cancer."

That was pretty much it. She told everyone else.

Re: told I had cancer today

Make sure you also get genetic testing done. If you have a microsatellite instability (as I did) chemo may be contra-indicated and actually make things worse. MSI can cause tumors but they are of the type which do not tend to spread. It can also cause lymph nodes to swell but not contain cancer. My ...

Re: Thanks to Obamacare Alive Today

Obamacare may be a good thing in some ways for the poor and those with pre-existing conditions, but as they say, there is no free lunch. Someone has to pay for all that coverage which did not exist before. That someone is mostly young healthy people who do not want nor need expensive health insuranc...

Re: Anyone have panic attacks? What do you do?

I have had many many panic attacks over my life, especially when my hemoglobin levels had fallen to 7 pre-dx. Anyone who has had one can tell you they aren't pretty. One of the things that happens during a panic attacks is that you hyperventilate and get too much CO2 in your blood. This is why getti...

Well when they found my cancer it was about 6 cm long and 2 cm thick and looked like angry burnt charcoal, all knotted and gross. It was pitch black.

Re: CRC Spreading to skin/arm ... ever hear of it?

Has he been tested for Lynch? If it is a tumor, it may be skin cancer. If he has Lynch, both colon and skin are within the Lynch family. Hopefully it is something benign. I have Lynch and have had both CRC and Melanoma within the past 5 years. Pretty classic case. Men with Lynch have an 85% chance ...

Re: September Exercise & Weight Loss Thread

I've lost 32 pounds in 10 weeks by downloading an Android Calorie Counter app and counting the calories every day. If you wish to lose weight you need to take the emotion out of it and quantify. Calorie counting does that. Everyone is different. I am 6'5" and weighed 273 when I started. All of ...

Re: The FOODS THAT HELP YOU POOP thread...

As CRC survivors we all know, constipation can be a problem. I personally struggle going more than once a week and need laxatives even for that. The purpose of this thread is to discuss the foods that you have personally found to help you with regularity. Some may be commonplace and some may be kin...

Re: The FOODS THAT HELP YOU POOP thread...

I think fiber is key for me but I have a hard time finding anything I like. I hate those fiber one bars for example. And the various fiber chews and such seem to really cause gassiness. I have read avocado has good fiber and I love it. I may start eating more of that. I've tried the fiber route and...

Re: The FOODS THAT HELP YOU POOP thread...

Yeah prunes are nasty. That's great thing about this cereal, it's really yummy and it works. Not sure if it is the oats or the marshmallows or what but it works. Maybe Lucky Charms (which may be easier to acquire) would work the same, dunno.

Re: Struggling with daily bowel movements

I don't know whether this is healthy or not but I take one big dose of Miralax every Saturday, poop like a maniac on Sunday and I'm cleaned out for the week. Tried taking a single dose every day but that never did a thing. Only the Saturday quad-dose seems to have the desired effect. Oh well, such i...

Re: Stage IV adenocarcinoma began in appendix

I had a 6 cm tumor right over my appendix. However in my case mine had not spread because it was based upon a Microsatellite Instability High which is a genetic disorder that tends to create numerous cancer events yet is also non-aggressive. I had right side of my colon removed along with 32 lymph n...

Re: Struggling with daily bowel movements

I am now 5 years NED and I typically go 3 to 5 days without a bowel movement. Have tried all of the standard remedies and nothing seems to help consistently. The one thing that does work is that every Sunday I do a BIG dose of Miralax. Next day I have a massive crap and all better. Not optimal but k...
