Re: Constipation - Drinking Water (>120 ounces)

Do you drink coffee? I think it helps.

This may seem ludicrous, but based on my personal experience, a combination of metformin and lots of coffee --doesn't have to be caffeinated--in the morning is sure to guarantee loose stools. And plenty of them.

Re: Need Support - Told today I'm on Palliative Care

Really glad to read that you are responding to chemo now. I think that there is no doubt that you need to get involved with a real cancer center. It's great that you are consulting with someone at Mass General. I would suggest that if you are going to travel to Boston you might try to get a referral...

Re: Mop up chemo - Port vs non-port for Oxi?

I have lousy veins, and every IV is a torture. I can't imagine having gotten through 12 rounds of FOLFOX and now Keytruda every three weeks, not to mention countless blood draws, without my port. I love my port. :D I get my scans done at a place where they can't access my port, and thus have to have...

Re: Triphasic CT results/Keytruda

Some of those descriptions are cryptic or confusing, to say the least. But I can report that when you are having the scan it proceeds pretty much exactly like any other CT with contrast. You drink the barium yucky stuff in the waiting room, go in and have the IV placed for the contrast--and OMG do I...

Re: Insurance Cos increasingly resistant to scans

BTW, **after** the triphasic CT was performed, I received a letter from Anthem informing me that AIM Specialty Health has approved a procedure for me which is described as "CT ABD & PELVIS W/O CONTRAST." I don't know about you, but to me this looks like they approved a CT without contr...

Re: Tooth pain-need to see dentist. Will this impact Immunotherapy (Keytruda)?

I had a cerebral angiogram while on Keytruda, which involved inserting a probe through the femoral artery and threading it up to my brain. It was actually supposed to be an angioplasty, but the degree of stenosis turned out to be less than anticipated, but in any case the change of course had nothin...

Triphasic CT results/Keytruda

Well, as I noted in the thread about insurance companies and scans, they wouldn't let me have an MRI, so I had a "triphasic" CT scan instead. This is supposed to do a better job of imaging the liver. Apparently the dye is taken up in the arterial system and portal veins at different times,...

Re: positive FIT test and rectal bleeding

Good that you are having it checked out, but here is my advice, which I adopted as I woke up from surgery knowing that I had colon cancer but not what stage: Don't freak out about anything until you KNOW you have reason to freak out. And then only allow yourself to freak out for as little time as yo...

Re: Insurance Cos increasingly resistant to scans

Our plan is through my husband's employer. I'll pass on the HR/insurance broker angle to my H. He talked to the advocate yesterday--she's apparently an RN--and she said that it is SOP to require a CT before an MRI, and that they should approve an MRI now, assuming that the radiologist and my oncolog...

Re: Need thoughts

Welcome to the ongoing state of uncertainty that is CRC, alas! I'm happy to hear that you are "only" stage II, but sympathize with the dilemma posed by your risk factors and pre-existing liver disease. You've gotten excellent advice already. It's great that your doctors have already sent y...

Re: recovery from colonoscopy?

One low point was when I pooped my pants on Thursday and then fell down the stairs in my rush to get to the bathroom. I had the phone in one hand and note-taking material in the other because I was waiting for a call back from the nurse, so I didn't use my hands to try to stop my fall. Fortunately ...

Re: Things Not to Say and the Responses I want to Make (Rant)

And what is worse is how other patients and even care providers expect others to be polite, even in the face of the most extreme adversity!

Why wouldn't they? Perhaps the fact that others in the same boat have that expectation should indicate something.

Insurance Cos increasingly resistant to scans

Last year, when my oncologist and I first discussed taking a look at my liver with an MRI--since surgery found a 5mm met that didn't show on CT--he told me that insurance companies were becoming increasingly resistant to approving scans, and we'd have to "make a case for it." Long story sh...
