Brachytherapy for local recurrence/ostomy reversal?

This might be a long shot, but has anyone here ever been treated with radiation seeds (brachytherapy) for a local recurrence? I had this done in late 2019 and it cured my cancer (yay!) but has caused a lot of damage to my rectum - cavity, inflammation, festering infection. I had to get a colostomy l...

Re: Accident with 5FU bottle

I had an accident like that once, but it was the needle nicking a vein in my sleep. Thankfully the 5FU was done flowing, and I took a Lyft to the MSK urgent care and they checked it and disconnected it. It was scary to see all that blood though!

Re: Question For All Those Who Have Had Illeostomy Reversal Surgery

I wonder if this would have helped me before my reversal. My connection point is too narrow for a regular colonoscopy so I have to do endoscopy and CT colonography to see the whole colon. However, that’s my only real issue - I’ve never had any blockages.

Re: Just need to vent because I’m angry

Do you mean she’s dropping the Oxaliplatin and only doing Xeloda? Some people drop it early due to adverse effects.

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

It turns out I was right. There was a 5-7% chance that I would have a local recurrence in my rectum, and I am officially in that group. I have a small tumor, right at the anastomosis, where I had my low anterior resection two years ago. Dr. Paty is recommending targeted SBRT therapy since the tumor ...

Re: Pain below right ribcage

Yes, I get that pain now and then. I had my liver resection over a year ago. I think it’s caused by a little inflammation in the resected area — but my LDH is high right now and I’m getting an MRI on Thursday to confirm whether I have a recurrence. However, I think that pain is pretty common when yo...

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

No, it wasn't noted in any of my previous colonoscopies that I am aware of. Yes, I see now that it's a significant increase. I have no doubt it's a local recurrence, just need to confirm it with the MRI. It seem so unfair because honestly that's the last place I expected it to recur - I did radiatio...

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

Do you have the actual radiology report? If not, you need to get it. It'll tell you what the uptake value is of that spot called SUV. If you don't have the previous PET report, I would also get that too. Yes, I have the actual report. I 'm not brave enough to look at the actual scans though. When I...

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

Very interesting, then that could be what it is. Of course I had radiation before my LAR, which is supposed to reduce the chance of local recurrence - but I seem to always beat the odds on those things! I also had clear margins. Oh well, cancer sucks.

Re: My recent significant CEA jump.

Thanks for posting this. My CEA keeps going up (see my other thread) and they think they see recurrence at my original surgical site, but my colonoscopy a month ago was clear so I still wonder. I have been working in a stressful job, although that's not near the amount of stress you've experienced. ...

And now I’m looking at my CEA - 9.8! And my LDH is 437! It was 168 three weeks ago.

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

The original site is actually the recto-sigmoid area, and it's very scar-tissued due to radiation. Not sure how easy it will be to surgically remove. @NHMike, they don't know the size because it was a PET scan and it only shows uptake. I think she said the uptake was a bit higher than my PET a year ...

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

Update: It turns out that it might be a recurrence at the original site (anastomosis). I know people here have experienced this before, but I'm wondering what options you were presented. I have a MRI on Sunday to confirm and a meeting with the surgeon next Thursday. I am also having an MRI of the li...

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

Thanks all. I have a PET scan scheduled for October 31 so we’ll see what it says. I have a feeling that, if there’s any recurrence at all, it’s in my liver because I occasionally get slight pangs in that area. But we’ll see.

Re: Rising CEA - What would you do?

Hi rad, that's an interesting study. I wonder if I am in that group. Mine has been rising for so long, that my oncologist just ordered a PET scan for October 31. I'm going along with it because I want to know for sure whether something is causing this rise. But that study is somewhat reassuring. I d...
