Re: New here, diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer and have a few questions

Hi Kev, Finding this board was a godsend to me. Ask question here - there are many informed, experienced and helpful folks. My experience here led me to battle my insurance to go out of network for surgery. I live in an area with one board certified surgeon, who I could tell wasn't following standar...

Re: Bone Density / Females

Alendronate sodium 70 mg. Do not seem to have much of a side effect so far as I can tell. PCP retired and still getting squared away with the new doc. No one has given me a timeframe, but I am guessing about five years. One thing was obvious: the tailbone healed up and the (longish term) pain went a...

Re: Bone Density / Females

Yes. Followup scans indicated sacral fractures - subsequent bone scans revealed full blown osteoporosis. PCP believes due to radiation and a bicycle crash (post radiation) months previously which had not healed. Stopped dancing and took it easy a couple months, on the medication and calcium and ever...

Re: New member - scared & looking for tips

Hi Malidosa, Sorry you have to be here, but it the best place for questions and support. Fissure - I did have one which was overlooked by my first GI doc and first surgeon, but identified by my second surgeon. (Changed surgeons in the middle of treatment and was very happy with my second.) Incredibl...

Re: What is radiation/chemo treatment actually like?

Pretty much same as what folks have reported above. First two weeks were a breeze - last week, not so much. I did ask for painkillers and the doc was happy to prescribe. Made a world of difference. Note also there is a prescription med for diarrhea if the OTC stuff is ineffective.

Re: I'm getting worried

As much as I agree with all the previous replies ... this was our approach with my hubby's last surveillance scan in June (NED from small cell lung cancer 2011) and it did not work out well. We waited for the mandatory two week followup with the pulmonologist, were rescheduled two more weeks further...

Re: Questions about Health Insurance

Hi - not out of state, but out of network here in Northern California. My oncologist spoke with a review physician to get the approval for out of network coverage. Took some time. Try to get a nurse case manager to help walk things through.

Re: Quick intro -- diagnosed Friday

So much of the story cannot be told until your post surgical pathology. Your very nice distance from the AV is a huge plus. I had what my GP told me was a huge (7 cm) tumor that had been there awhile. Struggled getting a qualified surgeon. But once the insurance approvals came through, absolutely ro...

Re: Stupid health insurance...

Repeating Rock Robster's advice. Please bring your oncologist into the discussion right away and ask him to have a conversation with the insurance company. I tried tangling with my insurance company for over six weeks (going out of network for surgery.) Got nowhere until I brought in my oncologist. ...

Re: Radiation relief?

There are rectal pain creams with lidocaine. Believe I found one at CVS in California. I asked my radiation oncologist for a prescription strength pain killer for the last two weeks and used it for about two weeks after radiation ended. Some describe this as broken glass, others as razor blades, oth...

Re: Need thoughts

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. While I did not get a decent initial staging, guessing I was close to yours, about 20 months ago, except rectal. Wondered to my oncologist if he could make a case for "wait and watch." He said the yes, he probably could if he wanted to. But, he added, wh...

The pill is capecitabine; Xelox is a brand name. The pill is the oral version of the 5-FU (https://www.macmillan.org.uk/information-and-support/treating/chemotherapy/drugs-and-combination-regimens/individual-drugs/fluorouracil.html) Your hubby is on the standard best practice for this type and stage...
