Re: Second opinions? Stomach cancer cells?

I would *highly* recommend getting to one of the top hospitals in LA, if at all possible. In my experience, it's surprisingly easy to get an appointment at those places. Insurance covers it to the same extent it covers your local hospital. And their expertise is head-and-shoulders above what you'll ...

Re: Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Good for Cancer treatment?

From that article, I'd say the evidence is extremely weak for HBO as a cancer treatment. I've not seen it showing up as a good option in any of my research on CRC. Not worth thinking about in my opinion.

Re: Does immunotherapy offer a cure?

If you're MSI-high, you don't need to be in a clinical trial to get immunotherapy. At least in the states, Keytruda is already approved for MSI-high CRC (and all MSI-high cancers). If you can't get it in Canada, any cancer hospital in the states should be able to give it to you. The only hurdle is y...

Re: Lungs metastasis in Rectal cancer_12 tumors, RAS wild, MSS, incurable, 27 yo man

When was the last time he had a scan? I wouldn't think it's even possible for a new (colorectal) tumor to show up at 5 cm. Typically it would take quite a few months to reach that size. That said, he's probably on the right treatment for now. As I mentioned in another thread, a second opinion is def...

Please, please, please get second (and probably third) opinions at major cancer centers. It's unlikely your road will be easy, but with the right team it could be long. You'd be amazed at the stories of how much cancer people have eliminated with treatment. There is so much that can be done these da...

Re: New Direction??

Also, quick thoughts on colostomy. I was horrified at the thought of a colostomy before I woke up from an emergency surgery with a colostomy of my own. I've had it a year and a half now and I rarely think about it. How inconvenient/unpleasant is it? On a scale of 0-10, where wearing glasses is a 1, ...

Re: New Direction??

You're a trooper. That maybe surgery, no surgery roller coaster is the worst. Hang in there. Get that third opinion. Sloane Kettering or one of the biggest of big hospitals. Maybe someone can combine a couple different treatment modes to get to no evidence of disease. Start a different chemo regimen...

Re: so confused I don't know where to start

I have been (and am currently) in the "systemic chemo is all there is" phase. It's not a fun feeling, for sure. I think it is worth getting more opinions to see if there's a shot at getting to a cure from your current status. But if there isn't now, don't look at chemo as just a hopeless d...

Re: Dana Farber versus Mass General

I started at DF and moved to MGH. By most peoples' accounts, they're both great. Here's why I've preferred MGH: My doctor/surgeon at MGH was more aggressive. DF doctor said resecting my liver tumors was impossible unless the tumors shrank a lot on chemo. MGH said there was a good chance of getting t...

Re: Clinical Trial Advice

MSK is great, but they only have a small fraction of the interesting trials available. And the best ones at MSK may not have space for you when you really need it. If you have the time and energy, be proactive. Use every resource at your disposal. Trial managers, online trial finders, etc. You will ...

Re: 34 year old with recent diagnosis. So many questions

I don't have anything new to add, but just please, please get yourself to a major cancer center (or even two, e.g. visit Dana Farber and MGH in Boston). Different hospitals have different techniques they use, different doctors can be more or less aggressive in their treatment strategies. I'm not a d...

From my experience, I could definitely recommend that your husband at least seriously consider taking the job. But the particulars of his situati...

Re: Job Offer - Need Advice

This sort of thing is always a judgement call. And I don't have much knowledge of lung-only CRC. That said, keep some things in mind. You have 3 FDA approved therapies still to try, any or all of which could buy you time. I assume you would at least try Folfiri before going to clinical trials? Given...

Re: Liver blockage-Oxaliplatin Hail Mary

Hi Elenitsa, The one option they're giving you doesn't sound great, obviously. If you haven't been to Princess Margaret recently (as in since you got the "we're basically out of options" talk) please go back for another consult. And go to any other big cancer center you can. Maia is absolu...
