Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

Port is installed and leaving in half an hour. Overall mostly painless. I do feel it though, when moving around. I went in around 7 and was out before 11 walking out without a wheelchair. It was easy and fast with minimal pain (just a couple of needles). I have to take antibiotics for three days an...

Re: New on the forum

Thanks a lot Shana. I am home now and the main problem is to understand how much I can do and I should not do / rest. The recovery has been really quick and I went home on Monday without any painkiller, just anticoagulant injections, which I have to do till the next surgery in February. The managem...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

For those with a chest port, what's the chest port like, roughly where is it located and how careful do you have to be with it? Also, I understand that the needle used for infusions is rather large. Is this needle plugged into the port for the infusion? Also, how large is the needle? I also have a ...

Re: Throat issue/ Xeloda/Radiation

I didn't have any major issues when taking Xeloda during radiation. One of the big side effects is hand-foot syndrome. I encountered that while taking the pills along with the oxaliplatin infusions for my adjuvant chemotherapy. My dose was lowered twice because of it. I never had an issue with nause...

Re: Feeling nervous n very high anxiety

Hi, this my 5th day on xeloda and I’m still nauseous. Is this normal to be nauseous this many days . My nurse says it will go away but when. It’s so hard being nauseous all the time and hard to eat anything. Xanax helps a little bit . I’m on 3000 milligrams a day. Do you think the dr. Can change th...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

Recliners and elevating my upper body don't work for me. The way my belly is, in a recliner my stoma ends up parallel to the floor, allowing output to pool. I started sleeping on my side as soon as it was comfortable to do so after surgery. This allows my output to fall away from my stoma to the sid...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

I think I used the wrong term when I said “blowout.” The bag was still intact; rather, the stool had gotten past the ring and was leaking out the bottom. I had been feeling lots of stinging and was pretty horrified when I saw that. When I removed the bag I could see that stool had gotten past every...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

I had my first bag blowout tonight. Thankfully I was near home. I switched to the Eakin ring yesterday to try it out and clearly it did not hold up. I’m back to the Coloplast Brava ring and sticking with it. My poor skin - I had to take a shower and do some serious skincare before putting the new b...

Re: NEW-Need some positivity here.

Question regarding anemia. I was told that I had low iron counts this time but not enough to postpone chemo. The next one may be pushed back due to Christmas. I am wondering if it is normal? Perhaps still from the surgery? I had a bloody stool episode after this chemo and maybe I lost a lot of bloo...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

I wear my ostomy belt 24/7. It helps keep my covex pouch pulled tight to my belly so my stoma sticks out more. It needs all the help it can get because it sits flush and sometimes below the surface of my skin.

I'm NED!

I had my first post-treatment CT on Tuesday and got the results today. NED!! My spleen is a bit enlarged and my liver is at the low end of normal for attenuation, but those are most likely due to treatment. My oncologist is going to look over the scan herself and go over it with me at my next office...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

The powder was key also- pour it on, get rid of excess (I just kind of brushed it off), then dab it with Cavilon wipe. I would do this 1-3 times (per ostomy nurse instructions) for coverage, all the while hoping that my stoma would not start expelling...gotta get quick with this! I put the powder o...

Re: Feeling nervous n very high anxiety

I have worked my normal work schedule throughout my adjuvant chemotherapy. My platelets and neutrophils dropped considerably during treatment, but never enough that they told me to wear a mask or avoid people. They will test your blood every time you go in, and will advise you if precautions need t...

Re: Rectal cancer (Stage 3A) diagnosed late June 2017

You may want to look into crusting to help heal the areas of irritation you have. There are some good videos on YouTube about it. Basically, you layer stoma powder and barrier wipes to form a crust over the raw area that protects it so it can heal, but still allows the adhesive to stick. It has wor...
