Re: anastomotic leak and chemo delay

Thank you for your posts BenBen and PainInTheAss BenBen - my discharge is multiple times daily. The mucousy stuff goes through the anastomis leak and pools in a collection/cavity. When that fills up, it seeps back in through the opening and out my anus. There's a direct correlation between the amoun...

anastomotic leak and chemo delay

Hi folks I'm hoping someone can weigh in with their own experience about this or have some advice to offer. I had an ultra low anterior resection for rectal cancer on March 17 2017. After being home for a couple of days, terrible rectal pain started with a significant amount of rectal mucous/bloody ...

Good for you and your daughter for persevering. We always assume that doctors know best....but, clearly, not always.

Re: just had surgery - questions

Thanks Julie...I wish there was a 'like' button for posts :) Just to clarify, I'm not on chemo. See the onc April 13 to find it if it's needed. The chemo reference in my first paragraph was a quote from your post, except somehow I screwed up the 'quote' function.

Re: just had surgery - questions

As I'm on chemo now I guess i must let my body cope with one thing at a time so the frequency feels lower in priority until chemo finished. Thank you Julie...so nice to hear from others going through the same journey. Question - has the chemo exasperated your bowel issues? Good luck to you. Hope yo...

Re: Rant - colon vs rectal cancer

I agree with you Kristi. I'm a fan of using the correct terminology....and if it all gets lumped into 'colorectal' or 'colon', it diminishes the opportunity to educate and raise awareness specific to rectal cancer. Surgery, treatment and prognosis is different for colon and rectal cancers.

Re: New and freaked out for my mom (double cancer)

Hi Rob Unfortunately, it's not that uncommon to have different cancers hit the same person. I'm 51 and had breast cancer at 44 and was more recently diagnosed with rectal cancer. I just had surgery a week ago, and my hospital 'roommate' (aged 52) had a mastectomy for a recurrence of breast cancer, a...

Re: just had surgery - questions

Thanks for the replies! It's only been 8 days since the LAR with no stoma. I've had to take some stool softeners, and twice I've taken a laxative because the pressure/pain in my bowel is awful. I've had a couple of larger bowel movements...felt a little better after but not during!! I'm strictly fol...

just had surgery - questions

HI all I had surgery yesterday for RC. The surgeon had predicted an over 80% chance of having a stoma. However he said the re-attachment looked so perfect he didn't think it was warranted. So I'm super happy that I don't have an ostomy bag. But now starting to feel some anxiety creeping in about wha...

Re: No more scans, feeling scared

I agree with others that scans for 5 yrs are the norm based on everything I've read and I will certainly be insisting on this. You have to be your own best advocate and insist when necessary. I've learned this because I had breast cancer 7 yrs ago and my oncologist did not believe in 'unnecessary' s...

Re: I afraid

I haven't had the experience of multiple polyps so can't comment on that, but I get the worry and waiting for results. Try to keep yourself occupied....I know it's hard not to freak out. Hoping you get positive news.

Re: All clear? Or not?

Hi Beth...I'm in Ontario. Just checked google to see how may PET scan machines there are here in Ontario. There are 13. I'm shocked that BC has only one. Seems crazy. But, worth the long drive to get the results. Wishing you the best for clear results.

Re: I don't know what to think or what to expect anymore

I'm sorry that your mother is in so much pain. It must terrible for you to see and not be able to help. I have upper rectal cancer also, and did not have pain until I started radiation. This may not apply to your mom at all, but thought I'd share in case it can be of use. After only 2 treatments, I ...
