Re: The grueling wait for response to Keytruda (with MS status unconfirmed)

The pericardial effusion turned out to be false, confirmed by further scan. What an unhealthy amount of scare.

Re: The grueling wait for response to Keytruda (with MS status unconfirmed)

Maia, thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately my mom has pericardial effusion just now. No immediate danger but certainly life threatening. Our onc mentioned hospice as an option as frequent tapping from multiple sites (heart, lungs and abdomen) could be quite a suffering. We are not giving up ...

The grueling wait for response to Keytruda (with MS status unconfirmed)

Hate to be a downer but I really need to vent. So after my mom had her first shot of Keytruda on 5 June, she was hospitalized 4 times for pleural fluid and/or ascites tapping. The fluids in both sites reaccumulated rapidly as if actually worsened by Keytruda or progression. So rapid (~800 ml daily) ...

Re: Things Not to Say and the Responses I want to Make (Rant)

I am at the hostipal with my mom who is having pleural fluid and ascites tap. This lady next to us, she was hospitalized to treat symptoms from some advanced cancer. We overheard that the lady refused conventional treatment and turned to TCM instead, without consulting any TCM practitioner but Dr. G...

Re: Ascites. Peritoneal mets confirmed.

Had an interesting discussion with our onc just now. Bad news first -- test result is out and my mom's MS status is indeterminate . According to our onc, MS status is determined by comparing "normal cells" to "malignant cells" in the sample. Biopsy would yield most accurate resul...

Re: Ascites. Peritoneal mets confirmed.

LMighty, so sorry about the need of repeated tapping for the ascites. I imagine your mom's frustration. Too early to say about Keytruda's effects so let's just keep hoping for the best. About Tecentriq, as I've said, maybe it is not worth the hassle, since she's getting Keytruda --an anti PD-1--, w...

Re: Ascites. Peritoneal mets confirmed.

Update: Mom is just hospitalized again for ascites tapping. 4th time in about a month's time so my mom is quite frustrated. Ascites seems to accumulate much faster than before. Again it could be pseudoprogression but there is no way for our onc to tell exactly. Anyways it's way too early to say Keyt...

Re: Ascites. Peritoneal mets confirmed.

Update: it's day 2 since first Keytruda infusion and my mom is hospitalised again due to shortness of breath. Chest X-ray shows slight increase of pleural fluid and a bit more shadowy areas than a few days ago. Our onc says not to worry as it's likely pseudoprogression considering my mom also develo...

Re: Ascites. Peritoneal mets confirmed.

One thing -- did you mean even though we can't get Tecentriq in Hong Kong, the combination of Keytruda with Cotellic is thought to produce similar result without Tecentriq? Yes. Tecentriq (atezolizumab) is an anti PD-L1. The 'L' in the name PD-1 stands for the L igand in the tumour cells. Keytruda ...

Re: Ascites. Peritoneal mets confirmed.

So, the combination of Keytruda with cobimetinib --Cotellic-- or any other MEK inhibitor available in Hong Kong --like trametinib (Mekinist) should be equivalent. Hi Maia, One thing -- did you mean even though we can't get Tecentriq in Hong Kong, the combination of Keytruda with Cotellic is thought...

Re: Ascites. Peritoneal mets confirmed.

Update: The MS status test result won't be available until after a week at earliest. After discussing with the onc we decided to go for the first round of Keytruda on Monday anyway. We don't want to wait in fear of significant progression anymore. That is so proactive from your mom's doc, how great...

How long does it take for Keytruda to work?

I ask this because the latest x-ray shows very worrying progression in my mom's lungs while we are still waiting for the MS test result before our onc comes up with a regimen. I have heard immunotherapy takes months to work in some patients and I am starting to worry if there is that much time left ...
