Re: Another ER trip today

Darkness embraced, So sorry to hear you are sick again. I have been seeing your posts about the visits to the ER and it must be terrible not to get any answers. As someone who has worked for a number of years in ERs I think you should keep seeking medical attention when you have a flare and make a f...

Re: Stage 2- no follow up care???

Hello, I second the need for referral to an oncologist. That follow-up care doesn't sound standard to me. My husband had a stage one rectal cancer (T2N0MO) 2.5 years ago. The surgeon initially told us we didn't need to see an oncologist because no chemo was required. In my opinion, patients with col...

Re: cauliflower stalk/ mushroom mass, 5cm: How to proceed?

Getting a second opinion is an excellent idea. We have done that several times at different points in my husband's care (rectal cancer- stage one diagnosed 2016) and it has been invaluable and also sometimes changed what we chose to do. You would be surprised by the variation in opinions that differ...

Re: Open surgery wound 4 months later

my husband had this problem too- Areas at the incision site of a laparotomy became red and inflamed with some fluid filled areas about 6 months post-op. Settled down with oral antibiotics and no problems since that time..

Re: Stage 1 colon Cancer, CEA levels, CT scans

My husband also had a T2NOMO rectal tumour and underwent ultra low anterior resection in Jan 2016 without any chemotherapy or radiotherapy at the recommendation of the colorectal surgeon and two oncologists we saw, as well as the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team. His CEA was elevated pre-op ...

Re: Symptoms of local recurrence?

Thanks for your replies. We saw the surgeon yesterday and he wasn’t sure what to make of it. Maybe adhesions on his bladder causing symptoms? .... he said recurrence usually presents with deep rectal pain/bleeding/change in bowel habit. He had a kidney ultrasound which showed his prostate is slightl...

Symptoms of local recurrence?

Hi guys, My husband is 2 years out from an ultra low anterior resection for rectal cancer (T2NO) no lymphovascular or perineural invasion. He had surgery alone at the recommendation of the surgeon and two oncologists as it was stage one and didn’t need to be shrunk with chemo or radiotherapy preoper...

Re: Cea question

Hi Janice, The surgeon my husband saw initially recommended CEA every 6 months (stage one rectal cancer, LAR, T2NOMO, no chemo or radio) and we specifically requested it be done more frequently and he was very happy to arrange that. Another option would be to get your primary care doctor (GP) to arr...

Re: LAR vs Excision

Hi there, My husband had T2N0M0 rectal cancer also. His tumour was quite high in the rectum so didn't need pre-operative radio or chemo. He wasn't offered an excision. We were told he required a LAR without any other options on the table because it was the only way to assess whether lymph nodes were...

Re: Recommended Stage 1 follow up?

Hi, My husband was diagnosed with stage 1 rectal cancer 15 months ago. He has had CEA levels every 3 months (we were told 3 months by one oncologist and six monthly by another but elected to go with three monthly). He had a CT chest/abdo/pelvis at about ten months (funny timing but again told six mo...

Sigmoid tumor & Para Aorta spread - Please help our little family -

Hi Sarah, I'm so sorry that your husband is sick. My husband was 30 and our first daughter was under one when he was diagnosed with rectosigmoid cancer. It was caught relatively early so we were fortunate. He did have significant, life-threatening complications during two long hospital admissions an...

Re: Stage 1 colon cancer/Oncologist?

Hi, My husband was stage one and we requested to see an oncologist, firstly to be absolutely certain he did not need chemotherapy but once we got to see him, he was able to give a lots good advice about simple strategies to reduce risk of recurrence including daily exercise, taking aspirin and gener...

Re: Aspirin Study starting

My husband had Stage 1 rectosigmoid cancer (T2N0M0) and was treated with surgery (no chemo or radiation). We saw two oncologists (in Australia) to get opinions regarding the need for additional treatment and they both suggested commencing aspirin (although the study is not yet complete). I imagine i...
