Re: All all ileostomy reversals open wounds?

From what I've heard pretty much all of them are left open. I don't recall the proper medical term. As it was explained to me: if they seal up the skin there's a danger of "stuff" being trapped inside. This could fester and cause an infection. By letting the wound heal itself from the insi...

Re: Temporary Ileostomy and Bowel Movements

I too passed some mucous balls while my ileostomy was in place. Mentioned it to Doc and this is apparently quite common. Your colon will continue to produce mucous even w/o food in the system. Eventually it'll work its way to the end of the line.

Re: What Week Of Chemo/Radiation Do The Symptoms Start Getting Worse?

I wouldn't complain about the lack of side effects. As others have posted the effects are cumulative. The first few weeks they're blasting the general area with radiation but then they start narrowing the beam to concentrate on the tumor itself. I think that's when the fun starts. Personally, I didn...

Re: Robotic surgery and LAR syndrome

My Surgeon used the robot and performed the high-ligation. I've had some minor LARS but, overall, things have been quite manageable.

Re: Is LARS a foregone conclusion? Anyone doing W&W?

I make the W&W call two years ago. To me it seems like just last week but, in terms of medical advancement, that's ages ago. I think that a lot has changed in the past few years.

Re: Is LARS a foregone conclusion? Anyone doing W&W?

Hi Big Jay, did you have six months of mop up chemotherapy after you went on W&W, either FOLFOX or XELOX No chemo besides the Xeloda with the radiation. JHH didn't recommend it and neither did MSK. I asked my surgeon if his patients with a reoccurrence had the additional chemo. He said some had...

Re: Is LARS a foregone conclusion? Anyone doing W&W?

I read far too many LARS horror stories and that lead me to go with W&W when I had a CCR. This was against Johns Hopkins' advice... but they don't really do W&W since it hasn't been clinically proven... JHH plays it safe. I did visit MSK and talked to Dr. Garcia-Aguilar (he's heading a natio...

Re: No chemoradiation before surgery

I'm not a doctor, just a semi-well informed patient, but I'm under the impression the radiation is supposed to kill any cancer that might be hiding in the mesorectum. That's the fatty, lymphnode-filled, tissue that surrounds the rectum. In the past this wasn't necessarily removed with the rectum and...

Re: Extrusions vs Nuggets

Hmm... maybe a bit of daily fiber would be a good thing. My diet varies quite a bit from day to day but there isn't a lot of fiber in it. I'm liking Bob's recommendation, in another post, for dark chocolate. Even if it doesn't help in my case I won't turn down an excuse for some chocolate.. the dark...

Extrusions vs Nuggets

Evening all, got an odd question for y'all. I'm about 6 months out of reversal surgery and, I have to say, it has not been that bad. Mild LARS but tolerable. After a few chaotic months post reversal I thought I'd settled down to a pattern. Warning signs are a build up of pressure and, if I make it t...

Re: Watch & Wait Approach?

There's a thread dedicated to W&W on the forum: http://coloncancersupport.colonclub.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53498&hilit=habr When I had a post-radiation CCR, in November 2016, I did a lot of research into W&W. I even went so far as to meet with Dr. Garcia-Aguilar at MSK who's running...

Re: Frozen Bowel from Colon Resection and chemo for IIA

My surgery was 9hrs... they were closing things up when the initial path report came back showing dirty margins. So they went back in an removed a bit more ... clean margins the 2nd time around. Yep, the wasn't fun but it's still infinitely better than cancer. Soon enough it'll all be a distant, mil...

Re: Frozen Bowel from Colon Resection and chemo for IIA

The condition is officially called an Ileus. Basically your gut has it's own mini nervous system and, if it gets handled too long or roughly during surgery, it will go to sleep and it can take a while to wake back up. Best as I can tell it's just a matter of waiting. Eventually things will start mov...

Re: Gastrogaffin Enema procedure

Took about 9hrs for my colon to calm down after the enema. However I think I got the enema stuff out of my system w/in the first few hours. After that it was mainly mucus. If I had a decent buildup of the gunk in just 3mo I'd bet you built up quite a bit more over 8mo.

Re: Alcohol use since diagnosis

I stick with the "everything in moderation" philosophy. There's actually a lot of evidence that moderate drinking can have various health benefits. However, pretty much anything is bad for you when taken to extremes.
